Once upon a time... two brothers collected fairy tales from contemporary storytellers. Two centuries later, we will do the same.

NEW STRETCH GOAL ANNOUNCED:
We've met our initial $1,500 goal, and we've decided to set our STRETCH GOAL at $3,000. All of the Backer Levels and corresponding rewards are still active, and we have 45 days to go...
If we reach our STRETCH GOAL, each backer, old and new, at every level will receive a special commemorative art print of the Modern Grimm cover!!
What does the cover art look like, you ask? Well, we won't know until our prize-winning illustrator is selected from the submissions to the book, but it's sure to be quite fetching!

Imagine for a moment what our literary landscape might look like if, 200 years ago, the Brothers Grimm hadn’t gone to the trouble of compiling their tales.
No, really, imagine it. Aren’t the Grimms’ tales and others like them among some of the most foundational of all storytelling?
Two hundred years ago, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, better known as The Brothers Grimm, published a collection of tales to ensure that the various German fables, tales and folklore of their age and before would not die out.
Take Cinderella for instance---the one you read to your kids has pumpkin carriages and glass slippers. And of course, I'm sure you remember the ugly stepsisters, especially as they had each of their eyes pecked out at the end as retribution for their wickedness. No? That part not ringing any bells?
Well surely you remember that poison apple that Snow White tangled with. In fact, we've adopted it as the symbol of our project. And of course, the poison comb and too-tight corset laces. It is a package deal, after all. No?
Though often reimagined and, in the end, almost unrecognizable to the Grimms’ original tellings, these tales and others like them are used to entertain, and of course, to educate, instill values, assurance and doubt.
The recent resurgence in fairy tale fandom, the long-lasting success of the Disney-ified tales for our children, and the fact that new, modified and mollified editions of the Grimms’ tales spring up again and again throughout the generations, all beg the question, “why are fairy tales so enduring?” and perhaps, too, “why is storytelling so engrained in our culture?”

In the spring of 2013, two centuries later, we will publish our third book, Modern Grimmoire: Contemporary Fairy Tales, Fables & Folklore, with YOUR HELP.
The goal of the anthology is to offer emerging writers and artists the opportunity to showcase NEW literary tales, fables and folklore, weaving new threads into the literary fabric.
We are seeking submissions for a prize anthology that captures modern, literary tales told through poetry, short fiction, short drama and illustrations.
A single award of $1,000 and publication will be given to the best emerging author of an unpublished work, either a selection of poems, a short story, or short drama. In addition, a $500 prize and publication will be awarded to the best illustration submitted.

Our collection seeks not to reinvent or reimagine Grimm’s Fairy Tales (case in point: we’re not looking for Cinderella with a cell phone).
Our goal is to collect, as the brothers did 200 years ago, tales by and for the current (and future) generation, and to see how our creative collection is inevitably informed by those that came before it.
Tales and lore are enduring. They are transformational. Indigo Ink Press’s very reason for being is to publish the work of new and burgeoning writers and artists–those who have the power to transform us, but need the means.
With a little luck (and a lot of magic) maybe, just maybe, 200 years from now a piece from our collection will have been altered and adapted by the generations, much like Cinderella, Snow White, and a multitude of other happily-ever-after predecessors.

With YOUR DONATION, we'll print and distribute the book, and award the outstanding prize-winning contributors. And if by some true miracle we find ourselves with more than we need, proceeds will go to publishing future books by our 501(c)3 press.
Help give our story a happy ending... with your support, we can publish this exciting anthology of new tales. Thank you for your consideration!

MODERN GRIMMOIRE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM: In conjunction with the publication of the book, we’ve been awarded a grant and partnered with ArtsinStark, the County Arts Council, to design an EXCITING SmArts Program for Stark County Schools. We’ll work with Stark County area educators to have students submit short stories, poems and artwork inspired and influenced by classic fairy tales. The work will be showcased in an exhibit, tentatively scheduled for May 2013, complete with readings and a gallery style exhibition of the student work. It will also be captured in a special student e-publication.
POISON APPLE BALL: Next May, we’ll launch our Modern Grimmoire anthology with the ball to end all balls—the Poison Apple Ball! We’ll celebrate the writers and artists published in the collection with a fairy tale wonderland-inspired soiree fit for a wicked queen.
