About this project
What is the project?
Down the Drain.
An original new comedy I pitched to a couple of actor-friends of mine back in May 2010. It was an idea that came to me in the shower, fittingly, and stayed with me throughout the day until I was finally forced to write an opening scene. In a few short days I had about 40 pages worth of text, including the final three pages of the play.
I passed the pages along to the actors I had in mind for the parts in May of last year. Luckily, it was well received. And now a year later I’m picking up the pen again in hopes to complete the project for a late-summer showing.
What’s the play about?
The project is still under construction, but the premise is:
Somehow an earthquake in China causes the plumbing in two US homes to converge, allowing our two main characters to communicate via his toilet bowl and her sink.
I’ve always enjoyed toilet humor, so I thought I’d go for the literal sense of that phrase on this one.
Who is directing the play?
I am… I’m the cheapest one I could find.
Who is starring in the play?
It is being written for and developed with local actors Meredith McCall and Martin Burke. Heard of them? They’ve done a show or two around Austin. I hear they’re pretty good.
How will you allocate Kickstarter funds?
Kickstarter funds will go firstly to the renting of the venue (Hyde Park Theatre), which has already been booked for a three-week run in August.
Any remaining balance will go towards various other up-front production costs like costumes, lighting, sound, set, and marketing.
If by the grace of God there is anything left, Imagine That will put it towards the sponsorship of two NEW projects into FronteraFest 2012.
What do you hope to gain from this experience?
Despite cuts in local, state, and national funding, the performing arts are still of utmost importance to any community. Imagine That is committed to the development of NEW works, by NEW playwrights.
Imagine That takes pride in paving the avenue for emerging voices and providing the community with new experiences. We strive to give playwrights and other theatrical artists a veritable PLAYground to investigate and develop fresh material without precedence.
Through Kickstarter I hope to further this mission by developing, strengthening, and showing a brand new full-length play in under three months.
What’s your favorite color?
Blue.
Are you single?
Unfortunately, yes.
How old are you?
Next question.
Can we get back on topic?
Oh. Sure.
How will Kickstarter donations help?
When I decided years ago to up and sell all of my belongings to pursue "a life in the theatre,” I knew I would have to make many-a sacrifice and many-a-concession. I haven’t regretted making that decision.
Still going that course, I've discovered self-producing can be greatly rewarding for the soul, but gravely devastating to an artist’s livelihood. Funding received from this Kickstarter project will alleviate some of the financial stress involved in producing. This will allow Imagine That to focus a greater amount of time, energy, and resources on crafting the best possible production for its audiences.
Ultimately, ticket sales yield a mere fraction of the overwhelming costs tied to theatre production. And while our goal is to provide a product which is accessible to the greater community by lowering ticket prices, we hope to sustain a high quality of production value, which ultimately raises our overhead.
I understand that these two goals are contradictory on a rudimentary level; but I received a Masters in Arts … not in business.
In conclusion?
THANKS for reading this far! And DOUBLE-THANKS for your kind donation!!
If you're unable to donate at this time, STILL THANKS for stopping by!!!
