Our food is picked by the most exploited people in the US. It always has been. Can you stomach that or will you stop the cycle?
Our $27k goal was just a warm-up! Our next goal is $45k. This will allow us to FULLY fund the graphics for the film. This is amazing because we have powerful information that will make a huge impact through graphics, like in the teaser above.
So we would really appreciate your continued support in spreading the word via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and more. Spreading the word really does work! We've gotten great tweets from Michael Pollan, Ruth Reichl and Marion Nestle and blogs in Civil Eats and Huff Po thanks to your support.
There is still time to contribute to the film and be a voice for fair treatment toward the people that provide our food. Thank you!
We all know that there is more interest in food now than ever before, yet, no one is talking about the people who pick our food, the hundreds of thousands of hard working individuals to whom we are all connected through our purchases at supermarkets, farmers' markets and restaurants.
FOOD CHAIN explores the state of labor within the agriculture sector in the US and the immoral practices that affect the lives of countless thousands of farm workers.
WHY YOU ARE SO IMPORTANT: We have spent 8 months on the road, logging over 400 hours of footage to expose the incredible injustice in our food system, particularly toward the hands that pick our food. With the help of dozens of incredible farm workers and people like Eric Schlosser, Bobby Kennedy Jr., Dolores Huerta, Barry Estabrook, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, and the UFW we've gotten to the heart of our farming system and the dirty, vicious secrets no one wants anyone to know.
We've tapped out our own savings and need post-production funding to make a 70-80 minute film that we hope will change the way we all look at food and freedom. We have heaps of bills, but who cares? We don't mind delaying those payments and being broke to get this film made.
The first $27,000 ensured that we will have a film to show and share. This film is about all of us, and without all of you, it cannot be made.
We have surpassed our goal, as you know. So why donate now? This film is an independent production. Every dollar raised will go toward:
- Editing: we have an incredible editor on board. The $27,000 target goal goes to covering her expenses and ensures that we'll have a film
- Additional dollars will go toward developing motion graphics like those in the teaser ($15,000), securing music rights ($10,000) and securing the use of archival newsreel and film footage ($5,000).
- We would love to begin paying off our bills from our 8-month film shoot, all of which are on zero to low-interest credit cards under the Director's name.
- We'd also love to begin work on a modest, interactive website to keep in touch with all of you and to continue spreading the word on the issues as we inch closer to completion.

SLAVERY IN THE US? WHAT?: The abuses we saw in fields across the US were horrific and unimaginable, but very much real. There are estimated to be 10,000 slaves working in fields across the United States (source: Free the Slaves), paid nothing and threatened with violence if they leave. And this is 2012.
Not all the abuses are this extreme. The point is that the system allows for these extremes.
Supermarkets have the power to change this. Most do nothing.

We are hoping for a world premiere in the winter of 2013 with theatrical distribution to follow.
Yes! When the film comes out in 2013, we'll be able to plan this with you. Let us know by email and we'll keep you informed. (http://mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org)
We spent just a hair over five figures covering expenses for 4 to 5 crew members as we travelled across the US over 8 months. These expenses included hotels (nothing fancy, believe me), meals (many were farmworker style), car rental, airfare (coach, naturally), and crew salaries (all of us took only what we needed to pay rent back home).
Documentary filmmaking can be expensive. Many films our length and scope have cost well over $1 million. We have been able to keep our budget in the low low six figures because of an incredibly talented crew willing and able to madly multi-task and because everyone is sacrificing their livelihood to get this movie made quickly and well.
Yes. We have an EIN and a fiscal sponsor. If you would like to make a donation this way outside Kickstarter, please let us know at http://mailto:email@example.com
It would be an honor for us to do so. We really want this film to have the widest possible reach. And that means developing partnerships with as many grassroots organizations as possible. Send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
