GRAB
January 29, 2011–April 17, 2011
Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian
George Gustav Heye Center, New York
This exhibition presents images by Idris Rheubottom, Tony Craig and Cybelle Codish of the little-documented Grab Day. An annual tradition in the villages of the Laguna Pueblo, water and food items are thrown from a rooftop to people standing below. A community-wide prayer of abundance, thanks, and renewal, Grab Day exists at the intersection of traditional Native and contemporary Western cultures.
The photographers worked under the direction of filmmaker Billy Luther (Navajo/Hopi/Laguna Pueblo), whose current documentary "Grab" follows families preparing for this important tradition. Luther's film "Grab" is an official selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.
