Character Update #3: Kiril Angelov & The Homeless Mercenaries
Here we are again with another Character Update! This one is a little special as we'll be focusing not on the crew, but instead on some of the antagonists in the game: Kiril Angelov and the Homeless Mercenaries.

Background Information: “The Consortium is the greatest threat – not only to Bulgaria – but to the way of life held within all adult, or should I say more established, nations.” That was a direct quote from Kiril Angelov, taken from the third chapter of an exposé written about him in 2038. He goes on to say, “Their attempt to harvest global support only highlights my point, and that is the Consortium should not be allowed to freely step into situations that have nothing to do with them. Excuse me, but who are they to decide what is right and what is wrong within the borders of fully capable countries that can take care of themselves? They have no right!” The author of this exposé, Bulgarian journalist Petar Batchev, was the first member of the press to infiltrate Kiril’s Inner Circle. He was found dead only hours after the writing was forwarded to his publisher.
During the Resource Wars and for
a few years following, Bulgaria was well known for their superior Air Force -
in quality, not numbers. They held a
formidable contingent of highly advanced aircraft but their real strength was
in their extremely well trained pilots. Kiril
was a General in the Bulgarian Air Force during this time and through his
brutal and often deemed insane tactics, he easily secured their position in
history as a force to be reckoned with. But
this was not to last. Upon the end of
the Resource Wars, his president father (Nikolay Angelov) gutted the Air Force,
selling off most the fleet and retiring the majority of its pilots. Soon after, President Angelov began speaking
of a future where Bulgaria no longer required a military and he was swiftly
praised by the people for his non-violent stance. Kiril was infuriated by this decision but
at first stayed in service out of family ties, albeit mostly in a figurehead position.
Several years later the Consortium came knocking and immediately became close allies with Kiril’s father. This was the final straw for Kiril. He left the military soon after and formed a renegade group of mercenary pilots, aptly named the “Homeless Mercenaries” by the Bulgarian press. The group consists of mostly ex-military from Bulgaria and its neighbours; flyboys ejected from their countries and released with very little compensation for their years of service. Many of them have served beside Kiril for years and respect his every word and action – they’ve been lulled by his renown charisma.
Something else of note is Kiril’s insistence on using pre-Resource War era fighter jets. He’s been known to say that they are not only extremely cheap and easy to procure, but most countries don't much care when they go missing. For his purposes (attacking vessels for money or politically driven reasons, forcing transport vessels to land before looting them, harassing the Consortium whenever possible, etc.), these older jets do the trick just fine. He thinks he’d have a much harder time staying under the radar of more powerful countries if he had more modern vessels at his disposal.

Present Time (2042):One month before the beginning of CONSORTIUM, Kiril Angelov and his men surrounded Zenlil and proceeded to do what they always do: annoy and intimidate. The Homeless Mercenaries usually show up whenever a Consortium vessel passes anywhere near Bulgarian airspace. Their encounters with Zenlil in particular have always been harmless, usually ending in Kiril and Knight 15 bantering back and forth over some political hot topic. Never has Kiril been considered a threat, in fact, the crew was even starting to like him a little. But on this one occasion Kiril pushed too many buttons and Bishop Eight (Bishop Six’s “rough around the edges” predecessor) quite literally lost his mind. Before anyone knew what was happening, Bishop Eight took control of manual weapons and shot down two of Angelov’s men in cold blood.
Bishop Eight was forcibly retired from his position a week later. Kiril Angelov was simultaneously given an offer he was unable to refuse from a mysterious organization, a group which bred fear in him for the first time in his life.
Fast forward one month to December 21st, 2042 – Bishop Six (the man you control) has just boarded Zenlil and is scheduled to be taken to his induction ceremony in British Columbia, Canada. Kiril and his Homeless Mercenaries show up almost immediately following the neural link being established and demand only one thing: to speak with Bishop Six or be destroyed. At first it’s assumed Kiril is bluffing, a pitiful attempt at revenge for the death of his men... But it’s soon realized that there is more to this situation than meets the eye, and that the Homeless Mercenaries have suddenly become far more dangerous than the Consortium ever thought possible.
(The above video is using the C.M.C. to listen in on a conversation between Kiril Angelov and one of his Homeless Mercenaries. We also show off a brief look at some of the interior of the C-3800-D Consortium command vessel, Zenlil)
Q & A with Darren Seeley & Frank Ferrucci:
Q: “What is your favorite thing about this character? ... And/Or ... what made you choose to audition for this character?”
Darren: What I enjoy most while in character as Kiril is the chemistry/tension between Kiril and Knight 15 (she is the Yin to his Yang). Kiril brings out my inner renegade. Everyday life can be a little bland so playing such an arrogant prick allows me to step out of my "nice guy" comfort zone. I felt I had a good shot at landing this role as I enjoy and have an ability to voice various foreign accents.
Frank: As the Homeless Merc, I love the fact that I can be completely passionate in my anger, and distrust, while throwing my loyalty to anyone that will feed us on any given day. Our group is like a pack of dogs who attach themselves to anyone that will feed them, but would gladly move over to the next table for scraps. I can be wide open with my emotions, even though there is a great deal of violence, there still is a longing to belong to something, to someone.
Q: “How was your experience working with the V.O. production team (Paul Ruskay, Greg/Steve MacMartin, and Deanne McKay) in or out of the studio?”
Darren: Greg has a clear vision of my character and the story, which as a relatively new actor made the studio experience much less stressful. At the same time he allowed my input if I felt a line needed adjusting and allowed me to develop the character as we went along. I found working with Paul in the studio to be professional, comfortable and accommodating. I especially liked the old-school video games in the waiting area....! Steve and Dee's help was critical as far as filling in the detail and adding the flavour to Kiril, not to mention explaining the deep and immersive relationships between multiple characters. I also have to say how much I enjoyed the ensemble recordings with the other voice actors, as fun as they were they brought their A - game every time and I was humbled by their performances.
Frank: You kidding me? Paul knows his stuff like the back of his hand. It’s magic, but basically years in the booth and in the industry will do that to you. Great to have someone with that much experience working with you as an artist. As for the “creators,” it’s like being with a family of kids on Christmas day. It’s an evolving game. There’s nothing like hearing the joy come out of a group of people when they see their stuff come to life. They all know/knew where they wanted to go with the characters but allowed us to bring them to life, through whatever organic process we came up with. Life creates life. They created the platform, we were lucky enough to be there and collaborate with them.
Q: “Tell everyone a little about yourself!”
Darren: I am a father of two boys who are avid gamers, so I am a villain in the game and a hero at home. They love the game and have watched their dad barking orders like some drill sergeant or commander at home and now in the game.
Frank: I have been acting for over 25 years, and this was truly one of the most enjoyable gigs I have had... I wasn’t thinking about marks, and other stuff...just the character. This is an art that I want to continue to explore and develop. You can take it anywhere.
Q: “Any final thoughts on Consortium in general?”
Darren: The gaming world is ready for this style of game; it is always changing and is more fluid and natural. With the realism of the character dialogues this could be a great beginning to a template for gaming trends going forward.
Frank: It goes to show that patience, hard work, with creativity, and belief can accomplish many a great thing. Would it be a groaner to say, “the sky’s the limit”?
