12 weeks of drama workshops with youth with visual impairments, ending in a student-generated original theater showcase.
This is a partnership between I.D.E.A.S. and the Lavelle School for the Blind to conduct 12 weeks of improvisational drama workshops with youth who have a variety of visual impairments, culminating in a student-generated original theater showcase to be performed at the school. Improvisational drama will allow these students a chance to exercise their creativity, self-expression, and risk-taking skills. They are often told not to ‘act out’ or to 'be careful'. Within the framework of drama they will be given permission to, to ‘act out’ and take risks, where artistic talent and self-expression is welcomed. We will work closely with the music teacher at the school, and will use simple props and costumes to aid in understanding and foster creative design-making.
While the project will end in a performance, rather than focusing on performance the focus is on the process of creation. The youth will actively participate in theater games and learn the basics of improvisation. The improvisations will be structured around storyline, character, setting, relationships, theme and plot. Simple props and costume pieces will be provided and used not only to spark creativity but to learn how these peripherals can change or enhance a character and/or story. Each workshop will start with a warm-up activity, usually a theater game to build teamwork and ultimately create a youth theater ensemble feeling. Story line is introduced, acted out, discussed and revised, before a closing activity brings the participants together again as a group. After establishing this foundation of skills we will transition to what we call "rehearsed improv" where students are not required to memorize exact lines, but through repetitive improvisation they will remember the story that is to be told for an audience.
Planning will take place in September 2011 with workshops starting in October on a weekly basis. The exact performance date is not confirmed but will be either December 2011 or January 2012. The money will be used to pay IDEAS teaching artists, basic props and costumes, and other supplies, like printing of a program for audience members, insurance and refreshments for a cast party.
Kickstarter is an online medium only, thus backers must use a credit card. If you send a check we can either consider that a flat our donation, earmarked for this project, or find someone to make that charge on their credit card and give them the money once we cash that check. We are not allowed to do that on our credit card as it is considered backing ourselves and the system does not allow that.
We would love to have your child join us, but this particular project is limited to students at the Lavelle School for the Blind. Feel free to contact us about how your child might be involved in a different project.
