About this project

Sudden Flowers Productions

We are a youth film collective in Ethiopia that has worked together for years to bring our personal stories to audiences at home and abroad. As youth orphaned or otherwise profoundly impacted by the AIDS epidemic, we felt the need to take control of our own stories through film. We have used this creative medium to work through the anger and fear brought into our lives by HIV/AIDS stigma and help people around the world understand our hopes and dreams. Our films have been screened at the Addis Ababa Film Festival, Harvard University and the Rotterdam Film Festival, among other venues.

Our Next Short Film

"Yemayegefa K'en: The Day That Would Not End" is a work of fiction rich in themes relevant to contemporary youth in Ethiopia. The story follows 19-year-old Yehonen as he leaves behind family feuds in the countryside to pursue higher education in the city. In an unfamiliar place, his values are challenged and his past comes back to haunt him with the unfortunate fate of his sister.

The Budget

Because our films are a labor of love, the budget is small. Major costs include Mini DV tapes, Amharic to English translation, and producing the final DVDs. Our sets and costumes are modest. Our equipment is a few years old, but is still holding up. If we surpass our fundraising goal, additional funds will be used to support the writing of new scripts and updating our equipment. What we really want to do right now though is make this film we have written. We hope you will help us. We’re excited to show you what we can make.
