Idaho's CORE effigy, Opalessence. will represent Idaho at Burning Man 2012. It's a 20' tall sculpture that will burn on Thurs. night.

Opalessence

Idaho was selected as one of 35 regions to build a wooden sculpture for the Circle of Regional Effigies (CORE) at Burning Man 2012. The CORE sculptures will be placed around the man and burned on Thursday night. We are a collective group dedicated to representing our region and to bringing this gift to Burning Man.

Our effigy, named Opalessence, will be lattice oval with an opening at the top and two doorways. The rounded organic form suggests several Idaho-related forms: an opal, a pinecone or even a futuristic potato. (Space Potato is a hotly contested nickname amongst our crew, and you may see a gnashing of teeth if you call it that in the wrong company.)

The egg shape also refers to this year’s Burning Man fertility theme. At night, the structure will be illuminated with colored lights to resemble an opal or a bejewled egg. Opals are mined in Idaho, and we're also nicknamed the Gem State. Opals were probably named for Ops, a Roman fertility goddess. Fitting, no?

At night, the multicolored lighting will be tranquil and inviting, and highlight the curves and organic form of the piece. The structure will be open at the top, with the spirals ending in points like a flower bud. If we exceed our fundraising goals for the project, the extra dollars will be used for scaling up these fun night light effects. We have a professional lighting designer on our crew, we intend to use his skills fully. With your help, of course.

Why Donate?

  • Efficiency: all monies will go towards lighting, lumber, building materials and transportation costs. All labor is volunteer. The majority of our tools and building space were donated as well, so this money goes directly to supplies and transportation costs.
  • Complexity: our crew has been busting out some seriously complicated compound cuts to make this happen for you. The angles (6 angled cuts per board) required some amazing CAD and engineering skill. Please reward their hard work with a donation.
  • Fire: the lattice structure will make for a beautiful burn on Thursday night. We hope you can join us to watch!
