ESPN Outside The Lines - The Long, Strange Trip of Dock Ellis

Update #14 · Aug 23, 2012 · comment

This brief update is just to let you know about this terrific feature article today from ESPN.COM: Outside The Lines. The Dockumentary team met author Patrick Hruby in Pittsburgh last year during the celebration of the Pirates 1971 World Series and we have been following each other's efforts since. We are thrilled and deeply touched by this powerful exploration of Dock's life and character.

We congratulate Patrick on this accomplishment and hope you all enjoy reading it as much as we did.

Hey No No Posse!

With your support, we surpassed our goal of $35,000 and finished our campaign as the leading Austin-based documentary to date on Kickstarter, with a total of $38,006. The money we raised is already paving the road to completion of the film. We owe a giant debt of gratitude to each and every one of you. This was truly a team effort, and we even managed to have a little fun along the way. Thank you again for your support and your trust, we couldn't have done it without you.

The couple of weeks since the campaign ended have been a whirlwind of activity. Director Jeffrey Radice is away in Africa on family business, but the Dockumentary crew is still hard at work making this movie a reality! We have a lot to share with you in the coming months, but thought we'd start by tying up a few loose ends from the campaign:

Contest

You can't have a contest without a winner! Unfortunately, we only received a single response to our contest - and we received it before the contest was even announced. Dock finished his major-league career with the Pirates at the end of the 1979 championship season, but only saw limited action. The only photograph we have seen of Dock wearing the '79 Pirates uniform came from Dock's neice Yolanda Toney.

We're still holding a few rewards in reserve for anyone who can top this find, so send us what you got!

Rewards

We will soon be sending a survey to contributors in each reward tier asking information necessary to the reward fulfillment process. When you receive the survey, please fill it out and send it back as soon as you can. We need them all completed before we can begin sending out all this cool stuff!

Coming Soon

We are excited to announce that we are continuing our partnership with Arts+Labor, the production company who collaborated with us to create the trailer. It is impossible to overstate how much creativity and technical skill they bring to the table. We will be setting up an office soon in their new "Filmmakers Annex" at their HQ in the Midtown Commons development in Austin to edit the feature-length version of the film.

We will continue to send updates as we progress toward a finished film - not as often as we did during the campaign, but expect to hear from us from time to time. If you want to stay more closely involved, we will be creating more new content and frequent updates on our website - nonoadockumentary.com. We will of course continue to update our Facebook community, and you should follow The Dockumentary on Twitter too... but visit the official site for more original content like we've been sharing during the campaign.

Last but not Least... Pops (aka Roomie) on a Stamp!

The No No crew are huge fans and admirers of Dock's close friend and roommate Willie Stargell. Most people knew Willie by the nickname "Pops" but to Dock he was always "Roomie." We are very happy for his family and friends, especially his widow Margaret Stargell who we met and interviewed in Pittsburgh, that he has been commemorated on a stamp in the "Major League Baseball All-Stars" series, alongside Ted Williams, Joe Dimaggio and Larry Doby. This will definitely be the official stamp for all No No correspondence! Get yours today!

DOCK ELLIS ZOMBIE HUNTER

Update #11 · Jul 14, 2012 · comment

NEW REWARD

You've unlocked a bonus reward tier - DOCK ELLIS ZOMBIE HUNTER. All Backers who pledge at the $250 level and above are entitled to a color original 4x6 Kevin-John sketch from an illustrated series, based on an obscure but favorite story from Dock's biography, including Manny Mota, Tito Fuentes, Manny Sanguillen, Dock Ellis, Rico Carty, voodoo and zombies. We're running out of perks at the $50 and $100 levels, so own this limited edition artwork and open spots for more backers.

"I had to go. Zombies. It could have been zombies. We were in a jeep. We got to a certain area. I saw these people walking - four of them, zombies, and a woman too - but they were walking funny. I say, "'This shit's got to be like Knott's Berry Farm, animated like for a show.' I was talking shit like, 'Well, the circus is over,' and they didn't move. I wasn't too hip on coming to a stop."

Donald Hall, Dock Ellis in the Country of Baseball, p 135.

Dock also talked about voodoo among the Latino players, citing Rico Carty:

"And Rico said he was going to kill me, because I put the voodoo on him. I didn't know. And dig this: I loaded the bases, and hit Rico on the hand, broke his finger, and he swore that was the voodoo! Prior to that, I drew a voodoo doll on a ball, and threw it to him in the outfield."

Does this man look like a Witch Doctor to you?

Don't make us put the voodoo on you - PLEDGE TODAY!

MEDIA MADNESS

We received a healthy push from the Twitter-verse, with Russell Simmons, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others tweeting their support.
