Update #15: Here they come!

Posted on October 19, 2010

Hello everyone... all of the shipping materials have arrived and so the editions are ready to go. I've got them labeled and will likely be sealing your flat mailers (with extra protection for the print, don't worry) and sending them off this Thursday/Friday.

Friends in Portland know that I'll be giving you your print in person so expect a phone call or text soon!

Very excited to send these off and I really enjoyed making the set of 3 images from Nowhere prints for those of you who chose that option. It is an interesting process of editing and sequencing that I don't get to work through too often.

Enjoy!

Update #13: In production...

Posted on September 28, 2010

I am firing up my printer while I order mailers and plastic sleeves for all your prints. Everything is coming together well. I have a lot of mailing addresses from most of you now, thank you for sending that information so quickly.

Hang tight. My goal is to have all the prints done and in the mail by October 15th. I will of course keep you all posted on the progress as things proceed.

I will mention this because a few people have already asked but if you missed out on the KickStarter fundraising there are still prints available from these editions so you can still help support the project. So pass it on to anyone you know and if you are visiting these project again and you've missed the deadline feel free to message me here or via my web site: ianwhitmore.com

Thanks!
Take care,

Update #10: 2260 Miles (give or take...)

Posted on September 1, 2010

So, it has been a busy month for Onomasticon and myself.

I have relocated to Portland, Oregon this month. I arrived on Monday and I'm waiting to get settled into my new home. I am joining the faculty at Portland State University in the Design department. I'm really looking forward to this new position and all the future opportunities that PSU will hopefully provide me.

In the mean time I'm going to be making a big push to get more backers for this project. There are only 23 days left.

I will be picking up the mock-up bookcase from my PO Box this week and I'm excited to get things going again from my new home base in the Northwest. In the meantime please take sometime to consider backing the project and if you are already backing the project please Tweet and post on Facebook to proudly announce that you are doing so. :-)

More on the way.
Sincerely,
*ian

Update #9: Week #6

Posted on August 2, 2010

Last week I took 'Onomasticon' on the road to share with libraries and museums. It was a fantastic trip and I an grateful to all the people who took time out of their schedules to meet with me.

On Tuesday I headed out of Chicago for Cleveland. I had a great drive and it was nice to be on the road again seeing the midwest roll past me. I spent the night in Cleveland and on Wednesday I presented the newly embossed book case with maquettes to the Cleveland Institute of Art Gund Library. After a great conversation and exchanging some ideas about the final form of the box I thanked my host and headed for the Akron Art Museum.

In Akron I presented 'Onomasticon' for the second time in 6 hours. Currently the Akron Art Museum is exhibiting Andrew Moore's 'Detroit Disassembled', a fantastic show. After another great meeting and a brief tour of the museum I loaded up my car and headed for Columbus.

I arrived in Columbus on a beautiful evening and managed to find time to walk around downtown a bit. The next day I headed over to the Columbus Museum of Art. The museum is under construction but they currently have a fun show titled "Fur, fins & Feathers" which looks at the place animals have in our lives. There is a lot going on there right now and the future looks great for the Columbus Museum of Art.

Farewell Columbus...hello Cincinnati! I didn't manage to eat any Chili or catch a glimpse of Terrell Owens so I went for a run along an industrial corridor near the Bengals stadium and spotted some spots that I returned to photograph the next morning.

On Friday I visited, toured and thoroughly enjoyed the DAAP Library at the University of Cincinnati. Their programming and reorganization plans are exciting.

And thus concluded my tour through Ohio sharing 'Onomasticon', photographing and experiencing another genuine mid-west road trip.

***

Overall the project is moving forward well. I hope you'll consider backing the project and helping with the production of these wonderful book cases.

Sincerely,
-Ian Whitmore

Update #7: Week #5 Update

Posted on July 27, 2010

Everything is coming together quite wonderfully. Yesterday Julia (TIPINFOLD) and I visited The Post Family to test the newly made embossing plate for the book case. Everything is looking great and I made sure to shoot a video and make some images of the process.

There will be a bonus Backer Update coming shortly after this with an Extra video of the plate setup and aligning the press before the test runs.
Onomasticon is hitting the road, so to speak, this week ... you'll see what I mean in next week's update. In the mean time I hope you'll consider backing the project and helping spread the word via Twitter, Facebook and even talking to friends with your mouth. :-)

Cheers!

Update #5: Week #4 Update

Posted on July 19, 2010

A very busy week for Onomasticon. I don't quite have images yet but the plate has been made for embossing the top of the book cases some slight design/orientation changes have taken place regarding where 'onomasticon' will be embossed on the top of the case.

In the mean time I spend the week running all over Chicago trying to source materials for the books covers, hoping to find a plentiful and consistent source where I can order in bulk when the time comes. During that process I decided to make a set of 26 mock-up books. They are empty but should help with putting the final touches on the book case mock-up and for presenting the project to collectors and libraries in the coming weeks.

I am attaching a photo of the mock-ups...
more on the way...thanks to all the backers...Spread the word.

Update #4: Week #3 Update

Posted on July 12, 2010

As promised, I made a visit to the TIPINFOLD studio last week to see the book case mock-up in progress. I am really happy with how it is turning out and I am looking forward to showing the case later in the month. Check out the video here, you can see the 'drawbridge' in action. This is an element I designed to keep the 26 books inside their shelving. Julia did a brilliant job of executing it.

Last week was a big week for the project and especially for the KickStarter portion of fund raising and finding subscribers. Thanks to all current and future backers!

Enjoy the video and images. Cheers!

Update #3: $25.00 Backing Reward Printed & Editioned

Posted on July 9, 2010

Hello again, a quick end-of-the-week update. I let my excitement get the best of me and went ahead and editioned the first page from the cacophony maquette this week.

I've added images for you to see of the edition, they are signed and numbered and will be put away for safe keeping until the fund raising is finished.

Thanks to all of you who've messaged me and especially to those of you who have backed the project.
I sincerely appreciate it.

I did make it to TIPINFOLD this week to see the book case. Expect a full update with images and a video on Monday!

Have a great weekend!

Update #2: Week #2 Update

Posted on July 6, 2010

I want to let everyone know that I've added a new Backing Reward, an unlimited option at $30 for a unique print. No need for an edition because if you choose this option you will get a one-of-a-kind print with a sequence of three images from my project Nowhere.

Also, stay tuned... I'm planning to visit TIPINFOLD this week to see the bookcase mockup as it nears completion. I'll be posting another update this week with images from that visit.

Would love to reach 20 backers by July 11th. Interested?

Update #1: Early Book Case Images

Posted on June 30, 2010

The project is off to a great start, thanks to the backers who've already contributed I really appreciate it. Included are some images of work on the book cases...

The book cases for Onomasticon are being crafted by Julia of TIPINFOLD BOOKS. A couple of weeks before the launch of my Kickstarter project Julia sent me some images of any early mockup of the the book case. She is still working on it, taking time to find the right materials and balance our budget. Hopefully in the coming weeks I'll have some images of a more complete box that will show the shelving that will hold the 26 book series.

For now enjoy these images and help me spread the word.

Thank you!
