Artist Eric C has been biking across America documenting his adventures and observations through drawings and stories.
Drawing America by Bike
Brooklyn based artist Eric Clausen is cycling solo around the United States. His project “Drawing America by Bike” is an ongoing multimedia project following the artist’s bicycle journey around America.
Clausen left Brooklyn September 5, 2010 and has travelled over 7,600 miles by bike and is in Southern California. He shares his experiences through drawings and writings from the road via his blog. The project aims to capture a portrait of America during the recession and life as a modern nomad. Clausen plans to create a graphic novel of his adventures across the US, focusing on creative surivival during our uncertain economic climate.
You can follow him here:
Clausen is continuing his journey for the next 7 months (10,000 miles or so). He will be heading up the West coast and zig-zagging east attempting to his every contigious state in the US. His journey will end back in Brooklyn sometime in November(ish).
What is the money for?
I'm riding a 24 year old Raleigh I got at a yard sale. It's holding up, but after 7,600 miles, it needs some TLC. Without the repairs, it's only a matter of time before I'm walking.
New Wheels- My rear wheel is failing, I got it used for a good deal when I was in a pinch, but I keep popping spokes every couple weeks (hopefully it'll get me a few hundred more miles) I'm trading in my now useless dynamo front wheel for a regular (see below)
New Chain rings/chain- I've ground down my chainrings to oblivion. When you ride chainrings too long, the chain catches on fewer teeth, putting more stress on the chain. It also is less efficient. If I keep it up, my drive train fails. Drawing America by Hitch-hike?
New Tires- I've gone through 8 tires already. I've found some that will last longer, but I'll probably go through 4 more before the trip is over.
Misc- Tubes, extra spokes, and misc bike repairs/expenses throughout the rest of the journey
Art to the masses!
Pencils, Paper & Postage- I got my eye on a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen to make my drawings even more magical. I'll write, I promise.
Solar charger- Looknig for a plug in the middle of the wilderness is tricky, so i've employed alternative methods for keeping the phone on. After having less than desirable experiences with dynamo charger, I'm switching to solar.
New phone + data bill- My iphone 3g is on it's last legs. It freezes up constantly and have dropped it too many times. Plus the camera isn't too great. My data plan has been my second largest expense and the hardest to keep up with. Choosing whether to eat or bring art to the masses is a tough decision.
Keep me Healthy!
Health Insurance for the next 6 months- I split my elbow open pretty bad in November and had to give myself stitches. Not something I want to do again, especially if it's more serious.
A good rain coat (Marmot or comparable brand)- I've avoided rain the last few months by being in the desert. Now that I'm on the West Coast, my $5 poncho ain't gonna do much good.
Food- Additional funds will help feed me. Food is my largest expense. My current budget is around $20-$30 a week and I'm barely scraping by. I'm riding 70-110 miles a day and taking in about 6000 calories a day (that ain't cheap!) Buying bulk foods is hard because I'm carrying it all with me.
7 more months! 10,000ish more miles! LETS DO THIS!
