WHAT WILL YOUR CONTRIBUTION BE USED FOR?
Olga was kidnapped from the former
Soviet Union at age 17 and sold to sex traffickers in Israel, where her price
was negotiated over a cup of coffee between her handlers.
Today, Olga is free from drugs and sex slavery, struggling to make a better life
for herself and her 18-month-old daughter. At the end of this summer, after living
in Israel for 15 years, Olga will stand trial and either be deported, or
granted legal status to remain in Israel with her baby daughter. If she is deported,
Olga will be forced to return to Russia where she no longer has any family ties
or friends.
The upcoming trial is a central part of our story, the outcome not only vital
for Olga and her daughter, but could set a precedent for all future trafficked women
in Israel. Your contribution can make a crucial difference for women like Olga and
help advance just policy and reparative action on a global level and in Israel, which is the only country and democracy in the Mideast that battles sex-trafficking.
ABOUT HOLY GHETTO
The film traces the personal narratives of 3 sex-slaves in Tel Aviv’s red light district who are trying to liberate themselves from a cycle of prostitution, drugs, poverty and abuse, and an American whose independently operated shelter struggles to help them.
STATEMENT FROM THE DIRECTOR
My Journey to Israel starts with my roots: Tel-Aviv's red light district is literally the backyard playground of my childhood. The problems that Olga, Yanna, Irena and Dave are facing are personal and universal: problems of neglect, despair and displacement. My intention is to give voice to these marginalized narratives and raise questions that may connect policy makers with the stories of sex trafficking victims. This documentary is ultimately hopeful and YOU, the viewer, can participate by taking action.
CAN WE EXCEED OUR GOAL?
Yes! While the $7,500 goal will satisfy our short term, minimal requirements to continue the production of the film, there is much to be done. Additional tasks will go towards transcribing, translation, hiring a full time editor and further, extensive Post_production work.
