Update #25: Meet the Printer of the World Cup Radial Bracket Poster
Hi everyone,
The vast majority of you have now received your posters and we've gotten lots of love and appreciation from you so thank you very much. It's really rewarding to hear all the great feedback.
We have a special treat for those of you in the New York City area. We host a monthly series of events at Hyperakt called Lunch Talks. We invite a guest to speak about a topic related to design to a group of about 20 people and the events happen on a Friday at lunch time at our studio in Brooklyn. The events are totally free and lunch is served. They are very informal events which are great for meeting other designers and networking.
This month, on Friday September 17, we are presenting Todd Truesdale from Recycled Paper Printing – printers of the World Cup Radial Bracket Poster, along with most everything else we've printed lately at Hyperakt. Todd is coming down from Boston to share his story. He's an interesting cat – Harvard grad, biologist, activist and environmentalist. He's going to talk about environmental stewardship in the printing industry and we'd love to have you over if you can make it.
Slots are limited, so please RSVP here to reserve your spot. Cheers,
Deroy
Update #24: Shipping Update - The Case of the 24 X 36 Posters
Hi everyone.
I'm writing you all this fine morning, after taking a deep breath and counting to 10. I put the pieces together this morning and realized what's going on with those of you who haven't received your 24 X 36 posters. It turns out the mailing service messed up. The 32 large posters that went out in the first shipping batch went to the wrong list of addresses which means that 32 of you got an extra poster in the mail and 32 of you did not get one at all. Ah, the joys of shipping.
Here's what we're going to do to correct this. The 32 of you who did not get your poster yet will have one sent out tomorrow, so look out for it in the next few days. I humbly apologize for the delay on behalf of the mailing service, and thank you for your patience. I had no idea and literally just figured it out.
The mailing service will be sending out labels to those of you who got the extra poster. All you have to do is slap the label on the tube and give it to your mailperson. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience.
Cheers,
Deroy

Hi Deroy,
I also have paid for shipping and received confirmation that the payment went through. Do you happen to have tracking numbers for the poster shipments, or might you know what's going on with my order?
Thanks,

Update #23: Info-graphics for GOOD Magazine.
Hi everyone,
It's been awesome to get emails from excited poster recipients over the last few days. One was even so kind to comment on our blog with a link to a picture of the poster hanging on their wall! Pretty awesome. We'd love to see more of that.
I wanted to share something else we've been working on at Hyperakt this month. GOOD Magazine asked us to create several info graphics for them this month. They've been a ton of fun, and we thought you might like to see how the thinking behind the World Cup Poster might apply to other subject matter. Here are our two favorite pieces we created for them.
The first is a map based info graphic that establishes a correlation between driving to work (as opposed to walking, biking, etc) and obesity. You can check it out here.
The second, which was released today, is about the different types of injuries that occur at Burning Man. Really fun stuff. Check that one out here.
If you like what you see, please Mark it Good at the top right of the screen on each post, leave comments, and/or share it on Facebook and Twitter. That really helps the work rise to the top on GOOD's site and it means more people will see them.
Many thanks for taking the time to take a peek.
Cheers,
Deroy
Update #22: Shipping Update 3
Hi everyone,
I'm back from vacation and here to give you an update on shipping again.
The first batch of shipping, which included everyone who had paid for shipping prior to the afternoon of August 5th, went out last Tuesday and Wednesday. There were about 165 of you in that batch. You might have already received your poster or will receive it early next week depending on USPS speediness. If you know you were part of that batch and haven't received your poster by Wednesday, please let me know and we'll make sure another one goes out right away.
A second batch of about 20 of you, who paid for shipping after the afternoon of August 5th, was sent to the mailing service today. Those posters will ship early this week and should arrive to you by early next week.
About 45 of you have not yet paid for shipping. We'll send another batch of addresses to printer next week, so it would be awesome if you could take care of that.
Inevitably, with so many posters going to so many places, things will happen. One customer has let us know that their poster arrived with some bending on the corners, someone got 2 posters instead of one, and someone got an empty tube. Unfortunately, these things happen. But fear not, if you find yourself with any of these predicaments, just let me know, and we'll make sure the situation is corrected. Those of you who have already received your posters, I'd love to hear from you. Did it arrive ok? Are you happy with the printing quality?
All the best,
D

I received the poster in the mail on Saturday. The tube was squashed and there was quite a bit of damage to the poster. I'm going to go talk to the post office today. What exactly am I supposed to do in this situation?

Kassandra,
No worries, we'll replace it for you. Unfortunately, dealing with the post office is luck of the draw.

Update #21: Shipping Update 2
Hi everyone.
I wanted to give everyone a shipping status update. I just spoke to the printers and they are in the process of rolling and packaging all the posters. They have an address list for everyone who has paid for shipping to date and have told me they will begin sending posters out next Tuesday.
I am going to be on vacation for a week as of tonight, so I just wanted to let those of you who pay for shipping between now and next Thursday know that your posters won't be shipped until the following week. I won't have internet access while I'm away, so I'll respond to any messages at the end of next week.
Cheers,
Deroy

Update #20: Shipping Update
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to let you know that we've just processed the first batch of shipping. About half of you have taken care of shipping payment and your posters will be shipped over the next day or two from the printer in Boston.
Those of you who haven't taken care of shipping options yet, please take a minute to take care of shipping options so we can get you your posters. We're excited to get them into your hands.
All the best,
Deroy

Vlado,
On the project description page we mentioned that shipping information would be taken care of after the pledging process. Kickstarter does not provide a method for collecting payment for shipping which is why we had to do this separately. We apologize for the inconvenience of the two step process, but we didn't see any other way of doing it.The idea of including a shipping fee in pledges would have been unfair. We had no way of knowing when this process began whether the campaign would be successful, how many backers there would be or where those backers would be located. We expected many backers to be based in New York, which is where we are based. There are about 35, and these backers can choose to pick the posters up from our studio, avoiding a shipping fee all together, so it didn't make sense to make them pay for shipping ahead of time. Another issue is that we had no idea how much shipping would cost. The volume of packages affects the shipping fee because we are working with a fulfillment service. The per item cost of sending out 200 tubes is lower than sending out 10. Yet another factor is that we had no idea how many backers would be international and where they would be. International locations vary in postage cost. We needed to know what our range of international addresses was before coming up with a flat international shipping price. All in all there were several factors that led to waiting to collect shipping until after the project was complete. Unless purchasing goods from a massive operation like Amazon that can afford to swallow shipping fees, shipping fees are a reality of almost every product purchased on the web. The shipping fee is not marked up. It is going directly to the fulfillment service. At $9 for 200 domestic shipments and $12 for 30 international, the total shipping bill is over $2000.
We sincerely apologize if this was not stated clearly enough in our project description and are very thankful for your support in helping us make this a successful project.

Update #19: Shipping Info... Finally
Hi everyone,
After a few days of researching the shipping situation, we finally have some information for you. We will be shipping the posters in tubes via USPS. The shipping and handling fees came out to $9 for domestic addresses and $12 for international, which I thought was pretty good (UPS wanted like $60 for international!). We've set up a simple little shipping payment page for you here.
Please take care of the shipping bit so we can send these to you next week. Apologies for the two step process. Have a good weekend everyone!
Cheers,
Deroy
Update #18: New York In-Person Pickups
Looking through the list of addresses we've received so far, it looks like about 30 of you are located in New York. Since a few of you have requested this already, I thought I'd offer it to everyone. If you'd like to stop by Hyperakt and pick up your poster, you're welcome to do so starting on Thursday. Our studio hours are Monday - Friday, 10am to 6pm and we're located in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn at 401 Smith Street, between 3rd and 4th Street. We're located in a storefront a block away from the Carroll St stop on the F train. If you plan to pick up your poster, please send a message via Kickstarter letting us know when you plan to stop by so we can be ready for you.
We're still missing about 40 of the 230 addresses, so when you get a minute please take the time to respond to the address request we sent out yesterday. So far we know that about 30 of you are international. Pretty cool. Australia, Canada, Spain and the UK are tied for the lead on the international front.
Cheers,
D

Update #17: Shipping Part 1
OK, I'm going to try to make this as painless as possible, but I'm afraid the shipping business is going to have to be a two part process.
Here's what's happening. Kickstarter allows us to collect your mailing addresses. You should have just gotten a separate message requesting your address. When we receive your addresses, we'll need to see how many of you are international and how many are based in the USA so we can determine shipping costs. The posters will be individually packaged in mailing tubes to make sure they are nicely protected on their journey to you. They will ship directly from the printer in Massachusetts, who will be handling the fulfillment process for us. Once we have all your addresses, we'll come up with a weighted number for domestic and another for international, which I think is the fairest way to go, rather than guessing a number.
If you could take a second to respond to the address request today, we'll try to have final shipping numbers for you tomorrow. Thanks for your patience on this.
Cheers,
Deroy

Deroy,
Thanks for the message. However, I have not received an address request to respond to by today. If it is not sent by tomorrow I will post another comment here. Thanks. HB

Deroy,
It is me again. I am one of the 30 who have not submitted an address, but this is because I have not received the email request. Can you please send it to me again, or follow up with me offline. Thanks.

Update #16: The posters are printed and are now being sold at Hyperakt.com!
Great news everyone! I just spent last Friday in Brockton, Massachusetts on press overseeing the printing of the World Cup poster. I have lots of photos to share so you can all feel like you were there. Recycled Paper Printing did a beautiful job. The poster is crisply printed, the paper is beautiful and there is not a blemish to be found thanks to the oversight 3 people. They are getting trimmed today and rolled into tubes before the end of the week so we can send them out to you. I will be setting up shipping later today or tomorrow so look out for that.
The Kickstarter campaign has now been completed, but we still have posters available in case anyone has friends who still want to get one. We printed 500 of each size, so posters can still be purchased here.
Cheers,
Deroy
Update #15: Prepress and shipping update
Hello everyone. Just wanted to give you an update on how everything is rolling with the poster.
I just heard word from the printer that we will have our proofs on Monday as well as paper samples. As soon as we take a look at them, we will share them with you! As I mentioned before, I'm scheduled to be on press next Friday.
A few of you have written to inquire about the shipping situation so I figured it would be best to update everyone at once. Kickstarter does not have a feature that I'm aware of that does this, so we will be setting something up next week so you can all enter the address you want the poster shipped to and so you can select shipping options. The shipping costs will depend on your location. We're shipping from Brooklyn and we will be shipping these in tubes around the world. So more instructions on that will be coming your way next week. If you happen to be close to Brooklyn and want to just drop by Hyperakt and pick yours up, that will be an option too. We'll set up a pick up day.
An update on the poster with all the World Cup results. Several of you have made suggestions and have strongly urged for it to get made which is awesome. I'm a little behind schedule on resolving it, but I will get to it and I will let you all know when I have something new to show. Someone suggested inverting the order so that the latest World Cups are on top and winners rise to the top. I thought that was great so I plan to implement that. I still need to figure out the color/white space issue, too. More on that after we get the radial poster wrapped up.
In other news, the poster has continued to receive lots of coverage on blogs around the world which has been really exciting to see. At last count, we are up to around 40 sites that have covered it. We were even on the front page of the Morgenpost newspaper in Berlin last Saturday! Never thought I'd get to say that. The Morgenpost featured the radial bracket front and center.
Have a good weekend everyone!
Update #14: Participate in Prepress Poster Proofing
Update #13: España España!
I'm sorry to all my German backers. I really am. Germany looked strong coming into this match but Spain finally woke up and played their game today. Spain is in the final and we are now guaranteed to have a brand new World Cup champion. Only seven countries have won the cup after 80 years and 19 tournaments: Uruguay, Italy, Brazil, Germany, England, Argentina and France. We're about to add an 8th country to the elite list. Right now, I think its going to be Spain.
The bracket has been updated with a red center.
Thanks to those of you who commented on the poster with all the World Cups. It sounds like people are into the idea as long as I manage to get the color palette under control. The color palette I've used is the same as on the radial bracket, but the density and lack of white space gives it a very different feel. I'll play with it over the next few days and hope to have something to share by the weekend.
One backer suggested placing radial brackets on a large map over the location of each tournament. The idea had occurred to me, but there are some spacial issues that would be difficult to solve. The radial bracket needs to be quite large to hold all the info in it. Several of the tournaments happened very near each other, making it difficult to fit several radials. France, Spain, Italy, Germany and England have all hosted. That's a lot of brackets in very little space. There's a similar problem with Argentina and Uruguay in South America.
Let's see what I come up with this week.
Can't wait until Sunday!
Cheers,
D

For the next poster how about some thin color bars on white instead of the blocks stacked on each other... Go Dutch!

Update #12: Making World Cup History
This is the game we've all been waiting for. It's the final as far as I'm concerned. Germany looks unbeatable, but Spain is starting with 7 Barcelona players on the field and they know how to win big games. Can't wait to see the result!
I've been working on a little something that has been requested several times now. It's a poster that includes brackets for every single World Cup ever! All 19 of them. I'm still working on it and havent gotten all the real results in there, but I wanted to give you all a sneak peak to gauge your interest level. What do you think? Should we finish it and make it?
Cheers,
D

I'd actually want to reverse it. Where instead of the winner being at the bottom... put the group stage at the bottom, and the winner bubbles up to the top with the most recent tournament at the top too.

Please, please, please, please make this. I agree with the 'bubbling up' suggestion; that sounds nice. Amazing work.

Update #11: Spain Squeeks Through
Spain pulled off a not so convincing victory over Paraguay this afternoon as team Barça's Villa found the net once more. He seems to be the only one that can find it for Spain and, as much as I would love them to take it all, I'm not sure that'll be enough to take down Germany. After today's matches, I think it's pretty clear they are the team to beat, so the center is now black. Although, with the way things have been going in this World Cup, your guess is as good as mine. I was just 1-3 in the quarterfinals. I am hoping I do equally poorly here and at least one hispanic team gets in the final. If it ends up being Netherlands v Spain, we'll have a guaranteed first time winner. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Sorry, German fans. At least I gave you some respect by putting you in the center.
The bracket has been updated to reflect today's matches. It's almost complete. Just three matches.
Can't wait until Tuesday.
