About this project

When amateur competitive food eater Hungry Todd Rungy decided to go pro, a film crew from the University of Texas jumped at the opportunity to follow him around and document his life and quest. One year, 250 hours of footage, 130 tacos and one heck of a wild ride later, the team is close to putting the finishing touches on the pilot episode for "the Hungry Todd Rungy Show."

After spending a year working on PBS Frontline’s “Death by Fire” about the execution of an innocent man in the state of Texas, director Joshua Riehl needed a light-hearted project. That’s when he found Hungry Todd Rungy. He recruited producer Dan Eppley to move to Austin, Texas from Michigan to work on the series and the rest is history.

Viewers will see Hungry Todd Rungy start at the bottom of the competitive food eating ladder and eat his way up while battling foes and his own personal demons. The series will focus not only on his competitions but the day to day activities and the people that help Hungry Todd along the way. But in order for the series to be seen, the pilot must be first finished! And that’s where Kickstarter comes in.

After financing the entire series out of pocket, we need help raising the money to finish the Pilot episode. The $6000 we’re trying to raise will pay for a proper sound mix, color correction, a title sequence and music! Your contributions will help us polish it off so that we can pitch it to networks and hopefully bring the entire series to television. But it all starts with the Pilot!

About Hungry Todd Rungy...

Hungry Todd Rungy, from Tyler, Texas, is currently the 4th most followed competitive eater on Twitter. In May of 2011, he broke the world cupcake speed eating record by consuming 6 (sugar free) cupcakes in 58.9 seconds. He’s won a bunch of amateur level eating competitions and his goal is to someday reach Coney Island to face off against his personal hero, Joey Chestnut. He has made appearances on the Cooking Channel’s show “Eat St” and has done press with multiple Austin print and internet publications. He dreams of someday being America’s #1 competitive food eater and having his own TV show would be a major step towards that goal.

Connected as Todd Rungy (807 friends)

A couple of filmmakers out of the thumb of Michigan and into the heart of Texas.

Director Joshua Riehl moved to Austin in 2009 and is currently a Radio-Television-Film student at the University of Texas at Austin. In 2010, Joshua Field Produced the season premiere of PBS Frontline's "Death by Fire." In addition to directing "the Hungry Todd Rungy Show," he will be traveling to Haiti in January of 2012 to direct and produce a documentary about the village of Creve.
