About this project

We brought zesty uniqueness with Korean+Mexican Burritos; 'Kurritos' to Iowa State University. With your help, we can upgrade to spread our fusion frenzy to campustowns across the country overnight!

Yeah, we've managed to stir up our own "tornado of chaos" around these parts in Cyclone territory.

In a cornfield-surrounded, land dominated by modern big-name chains and franchises battling to gain grounds into long-time small business restaurant establishments entrenched within campustown, we've managed to "find that niche" that's made us local legends seemingly overnight.

Founded in May 2010, Hungry4Huh LLC is a student/alumni-operated mobile food cart business serving Asian fusion cuisine to popular campustown nightlife districts and local pedestrian mallstrip sectors. Stationed in Ames, Iowa, it is currently owned & operated by Jayson Hansen, Trevor Carlson, and Eric Bagley.

We are locally known for serving 'Kurritos'; short for Korean-Burritos, a fusion twist between Korean (East Asian) and Mexican cuisines. Kurritos are said to produce taste sensations described as intense explosions of unmatched flavor. They are primarily composed of Korean BBQ-style beef strips marinated overnight for extra tenderness and flavor, seasoned steamed white rice, homemade recipe "Epic" remoulade sauce, topped with shredded cheese, assorted veggies (including diced kimchi; a spiced pickled radish), all wrapped within a slightly-crispy, fried flour tortilla.

Having seen success from serving Kurritos within ISU's campustown district, we are looking to upgrade our mobile food cart to a concessions trailer to expand our range of capabilities; doing so would provide us with many benefits that would serve as major milestones to growing organically as an organization. Some of the most major benefits would include:

  • Most mobile food carts, by local health code, require kitchen commissaries in order cook/prep food ingredients to be served at the food carts. Commissaries usually consist of restaurant and catering facility kitchens, whom usually charge hefty rent fees for limited kitchen usage time. Upgrading to a trailer would allow for us to use our own roofed kitchen facility for cook/prep and eliminate kitchen rental overhead fees altogether; a major recurring cost that affect mobile food cart businesses.
  • Our particular food cart model can only hold enough ingredients to serve about 200 Kurritos without needing to be refilled (a cap limit). A concessions trailer with our own mobile kitchen setup would allow for us to cook/prep on-site and begin cooking orders only right after they're ordered (instead of stockpiling with kitchen commissary & mobile food cart setup, which can gradually decrease inventory freshness over time), thus allowing to continually serve sizzlin' hot, fresh food without virtually ever running out of supplies.
  • With a concessions trailer holding a kitchen, we will be able to dramatically expand our menu and increase our business hours, as we won't be limited to a kitchen commissary's available schedule (which has currently been limited to night hours only). We've been told by countless local students to serve during breakfast and lunch hours, as campus town becomes quite crowded during these peak dining periods. We've also been long wanting to experiment with and serve a vegetarian menu, not currently possible with our food cart setup.
  • Perhaps the most vital reason to owning a concessions trailer is the ability of mobilizing a kitchen to wherever possible and imaginable; this includes not only retail hotspots but sports events, concerts, fairgrounds, parades, carnivals, etc. Having a mobile kitchen would allow us to spread the creative uniqueness of Asian fusion to other surrounding campus towns in the Midwest, whom have yet to try us out for the first time ever!

Our founding cart operations team in Ames consists of two impetuous gentlemen; Justin Winkel and Joseph Yu. Both currently attending Iowa State by day and serving Kurritos on Welch Avenue (dead center of campustown) by night, the two have always talked about the day when Hungry4Huh could come rolling into campustown with a full-out concessions trailer since they started two years ago. We hope to make this reality within 30 days of fundraising!

The concessions trailer that we have spotted for use has been displayed in our short presentation video, which you may have already watched. It holds everything that our operation requires, including an NSF certified commercial-grade kitchen, compartment sinks, a sidewall serving window and ample counterspace, hookups for an electric generator, roofed over with ventilation systems for serving during all four seasons, among a host of other things. The trailer is large enough to accommodate heavy traffic and to hold multiple workers inside, yet is small enough to fit in normal parking spaces to serve in most popular downtown/campustown districts.

Our goal by March 1st is to fundraise $10,000 in order to purchase the food trailer to upgrade our existing mobile food cart operation.

Our dream is to one day be able to become a national icon amongst street food vending as being the first street food business to spread the taste of Asian fusion to the streets of every major campus town in the country. The best way to accomplish this is to grow organically, through the continual natural spread of our amazing food, amazing service, and our persistence to reach our dream.

Help us today by making a contribution to fund our dream of upgrading to a food concessions trailer. Contributors will be able to follow our steps as we work to acquire and move into our newly-proposed trailer and prepare for a re-opening event in Ames. We've also developed four easy reward tiers for contributors to receive fun, detailed, handmade rewards for helping us make our dream a reality; shortly after being successfully funded, we'll be contacting contributors for mailing addresses and other details (individual information will be kept confidential and safe).

Every and any amount helps; by doing so, we will be able to take Hungry4Huh to the next level in bringing Asian fusion to light throughout university campustowns across the Midwest and perhaps one day, the entire country!

Connected as Jayson Hansen (642 friends)

Greetings, everyone! My name is Jayson Hansen; I am an ISU College of Business student majoring in Management and minoring in Entrepreneurship and am a small business owner (President & Co-Founder of Hungry4Huh LLC). I'm South Korean by ethnic background, but was adopted & raised from early childhood in the beautiful countryside State of Iowa. I quickly became fond of drawing/sketching, filming/movies, and computers all at a young age. Over the years, I began to explore more knowledge about these three categories of interest, for which I came to Iowa State in hopes of narrowing down my future profession. Whilst attending classes, I was able to discover the wonders of the business world, and how I could start my own business and really take my ideas to reality. This is when I accidentally discovered entrepreneurship, through wanting to solve a problem or meet a particular want or need with local students in my campustown. Wanting to bring a taste of my cultural background to the streets of Ames, I realized that I could create uniqueness and innovation in cooking through 'fusing' cuisines. With my newly-formed team, I was able to take Hungry4Huh LLC through 2 years of operation to where we stand today in hopes of getting one huge step closer to our dream with Kickstarter by upgrading to a food trailer!

Beyond all things business-related, I try my best to stay up to-date with modern politics while maintaining an open-mind approach to each new issue/topic as it arises. I am a strong believer in the Constitution and understand that, as a U.S. citizen myself, our Bill of Rights is something we should never have to sacrifice no matter what circumstance our country is in. I believe in equality, open-mindedness, free information sharing, continual progress, and world peace.

I also support green activism and the renewing of our environment and its resources; I hope to one day be able to successfully convert all of Hungry4Huh's processes over to 100% sustainability.

My future endeavors will include more entrepreneurial ventures not only revolving around the food industry, such as in the categories of independent film, hookah bars/cafes, study lounges/think-tanks, and the IT industry.

I keep a book on my nightstand for a quick read before passing out each night. It's entitled 'Reality Check' by Guy Kawasaki; a must read for all young-gun and veteran entrepreneurs alike.

I love hearing stories as much as I love telling a few of my own! I thoroughly enjoy getting to know individual persons and their unique tastes, traits, personalities, etc. Understanding others' individual perspectives has shown me so much more of this world, and with such color, instead of black&white, or even shades of grey. Socializing is something I love to do each and everyday!

Finally, I cherish my family and friends dearly; without them, I would not be able to push myself to the heights of which I have and continue to target to this day...
