A unique war game which combines bold Sci-Fi storytelling with naval and Marine tactics; a fun, dynamic, affordable game.
Returning War Vet, enters the gaming industry.
When I returned home to Providence, RI after 5 tours in the Global War on Terror (namely 4 combat tours in Iraq), I never expected to be starting my own business, develop - never mind - producing and publishing a game. Reuniting with my friends and family after 12 years of military service, meant restarting a lot of old routines and habits. One of which was Wednesday Geek Night.
When my group of friends were much younger we use to sit around a table; gab, roll dice, throw cards, and play with miniatures. We were always a "cerebral" gang and all of us moved on out from home to take on professions ranging from soldiering to logistics, graphic design to accounting, business management to computers and the like. It was always such a great time, and full of fond memories. It was awesome 'putting the band back together' with a few new members.
We took a deviation from our usual gaming routine in late December of 2009, and started playing Magic, the Gathering again. (For those that don't know what that is, its a fantasy card game.) We were upset at the overall expense of the system of cards, lack of overall imagination, and mechanical thoughtless game play. I had suggested jokingly that, "We should make our own damn game, least then, we've got nothing to complain about. We can just blame ourselves." A few chuckles later someone said, "Well then - let's start now." and we literally wiped the table clear and began work.
A year, later in 2010, we had a working prototype; art and rules but still no official company or business plan. Purely, a hobby, a creative unfunded venture. We had asked some friends that run a local gaming convention called TempleCon, if we could get in for free and demo the game in exchange for working security at the event. Knowing my personal history, they were glad to except the exchange and we demonstrated the game to about 50 people thru-out the course of the weekend. The response was completely amazing. We actually had people trying to buy our prototype cards and gaming supplies on the spot after playing. It was agreed between all of us at the end of that weekend, that we had something truly special -- as even in it's unfinished and unpolished form -- the game stood out from the rest of the 'fully funded' outfits and their games.
After another year, we were complete and ready to move forward. NSB Games, Inc was an official business, art and game design had been commissioned, created, signed, and contracted. (Thankfully, our gang had many of the necessary skill sets to accomplish this mission at no cost en masse.) The product was printed and we were starting to build local hype for the official release - funded entirely by our savings accounts.
In August 2011, we opened our metaphorical doors, operating out of my house in Providence. We were -and still are- a hit with game enthusiasts of all kinds. Our problem, we didn't have enough money to start another printing -- although making back slowly what we had spent, approximately 25K, we were still unable to pay our people or market the product accordingly. Everything was literally for the love of the game (and still is!) Thankfully, word of mouth had traveled to adjacent states and we found new immuring markets for our game.
But still it was funding, funding, more funding. The old adage of, "gotta' spend money, to make money" was becoming more and more apparent to the company. There was only so far we could drive, only so many hours we could work toward our goal (while still carrying a primary occupation), and only so many people we could reach without real money for marketing or pay. Our profit margins could have been higher -- it's true -- due to the unknown factor of 'would this actually sell large-scale?' we had purchased a very small order, inflating the actual cost of product substantially, and we profited only slightly by it. Still, we proud we had at least made our money back with a little extra to boot. As much of which was spent on "getting out of the hole."Still, how would we purchase a much larger and cheaper run? To keep the game alive and actually profit like a real business?
When asking for a business loan from Banks, even with our professionally created business plan in tow, they wouldn't go near us without 3 years of successful operation. Three Years! What could we do?!
Kick starter, was a suggestion. Among a few other clever ideas to build credibility in the industry and increase product viability.
Now, on the eve of unleashing a much larger, better beta version of the game, we need the help. Your help. We believe that this product is top notch, and have proved it on a micro-scale. We are attempting to move into the big-time, push harder, do more. As we have plans for web-casts, short fiction anthologies, and possible Xbox360 game.
There wasn't anything I couldn't handle in the Army. I prided myself on my dedication to mission completion, taking good care of my subordinates, competence well above my peer group, and my zealous nature to meet all my goals and obligations. But sometimes, no matter how much you don't want to, you just have to ask for help. Some tasks cannot be accomplished by one Soldier alone, or even a squad, or platoon. I just want you to know that your contribution was asked for only because we had no other alternative to keep us creative, and give us a shot at making it big. We know that with help from good people like you, we can make this creative enterprise an overwhelming success.
