A feature film about brotherhood, hatred and friendship, from a new generation of filmmakers.
Urgent update: WE DID IT! We just finished shooting the film, and we really need your help.
We wrapped our 19 day shoot, and have some footage to show for it. Please see the video below for a hint as to what our film can be. This is RAW footage, it has not been color corrected, nor has the sound been mixed at all. What we need help with now is the budget to get professional help in editing and sound/color mixing our film, so that we can tell the most beautiful story possible.
Hi, this is director Lukas Huffman, welcome to our Kickstarter campaign.
'When The Ocean Met The Sky' is an independently written and produced feature film. This warming, funny movie brings you into the life of three estranged brothers who go on a journey to a remote location in order to receive their inheritance. A map with an X leads them on one helluva a trek with their not-so-trusty tour guide. Along the way our brothers fight each other tooth and nail, are forced to help each other traverse the landscape, and ultimately learn to love each other - the only family they have left.
WE are creating a very raw and funny film that will frame family bonds in a rich honest way, challenging you to evaluate the relationships in your life.
A movie this emotionally authentic, and stylistically unique can't be made in Hollywood anymore. So we've turned to YOU, the film lovers of this world, for help.
Our team is a unique combination of dramatic and comedy talents.
The celebrity guest Executive Producer is Burton Snowboards professional snowboarder Mark Sollors, who goes huge.
Director Lukas Huffman is at the helm, who has created award-winning documentary and fiction work. Lukas' short film series 'Five Ways to Leave Your Lover' was selected for the Cannes 2012 Short Film Corner.
The script is co-created by the comedy writing team that developed the cult-classic webseries 'I'm With Desperate':
Our film blends the best jokes from the writing team, with the most sincere tones of Lukas' work to bring a fresh voice in the film world. We believe you should encounter surprises in each corner of the story, and laugh and cry in the same scene.
GUESS WHAT? WE'RE ALREADY SHOOTING THIS FILM!
We've come so far on our own journey as filmmakers that we can almost taste the premier popcorn.
The script has been in development for over a year. The production team lead by Lukas Huffman and Phillip Thomas has been working late nights (after clocking out of our day jobs in film production) fine tuning a delicate budget. We've been bouncing casting tapes back and forth, investing our own time and money into location scouting, and hosting lively rehearsal sessions.
Now we are finally satisfied with the twists and turns in the script, as you watch the brothers' struggle to understand each other. The performances are already powerful, and we've designed a beautiful shooting style that casts the supernatural proportions of the British Columbia landscape as a protagonist that challenges the brothers.
And, we have funding in place for a 21 day shoot that starts September 15.
That's right, the production team is already shooting this film! Big Gulp.
But... We need money to pay for post-production, and the costs of releasing the film.
This is where one-third of the filmmaking magic happens. We are raising money to:
- Edit in NYC. We assemble the footage in October, and then tirelessly wittle down hours and hours of footage through all of November and December. Our goal is to have a final cut ready for festival submissions by February 2014.
- Color correct the Red Scarlet footage. Our camera takes unbelievable images, but in order to get the dynamic color ranges that you see on screen we need to spend money on a professional color correction.
- Mix all the audio. What..? You can't hear me..? Fine, we'll turn the volume up then.... on every single shot in the film. The true magic of modern cinema is in the sound mix. This also takes a long time and a healthy chunk of change.
- Cover our 2014 festival submission fees (Sundance, Cannes, South by Southwest, Vancouver International, Toronto International, and more). This is a universal story about the harsh and beautiful family moments that we have all experienced, we are dying to share it with the world.
- Secure film music rights.
Even after we spend our own hard earned money on shooting, the costs add up. We want to share this unique story and we need your help.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We will start shooting September 15.... and the biggest risk we face is not being able to fund the post-production, in other words, not finishing the film we started.
We are all very nervous as we go into production.
When we do reach our fundraising goals, we will then be faced with the daunting task of editing our footage and pushing our baby out the door. This means 3-4 months of putting our lives on hold to do one thing - coax our dream into the world.
What we bring to the table is the energy and perseverance of young filmmakers (mixed with a good portion of naive ambition) needed to keep focused on post-production for the months to follow.
We consider ourselves to be a new voice in cinema, and we won't stop until our story is heard.
