A story that connects the source of the Hudson River to New York City, the great city that was created by a river flowing by.
Antony Crook, James Bowthorpe and Stuart Braithwaite from Mogwai share some thoughts about Hudson River Project.
If you would like to help make this film happen, please choose from one of the rewards to the right hand side of this page. Remember that we only receive the funds if we reach our target of $100,000! If we reach this target we can make the film and deliver on these great rewards.

Who is behind the Hudson River Project?
This project is a collaboration between Antony Crook and James Bowthorpe. We have worked on projects together over the last two years and the Hudson River Project is our next collaboration. The band Mogwai are also involved and will be writing an original soundtrack for the film. Here’s a couple of short films that we’ve worked on together:
What is the Hudson River Project?
It’s a simple idea. Build a boat from New York City’s waste, take it to the source of the Hudson River – the river without which the city would not exist – and row the boat back to NYC.
This story connects
the source of the Hudson River to NYC, the great city that sits at its mouth.
The film follows James as he makes a boat from NYC’s waste, the detritus of a modern megalopolis, and takes it to the source of the Hudson River high in the Adirondack Mountains, at Lake Tear of the Clouds.
He rows the boat back to NYC, through wilderness, countryside, farms, towns and industry, all of which rely on the mighty river that flows past, all of which are threads of the river’s story.
We’re going to make a film that follows James as he does this. Antony will be shooting it himself and directing a small crew, documenting the project from Manhattan to Lake Tear of the Clouds and back to Manhattan again.
We want to make a film that is a portrait of the city and the river, something that will reflect the beauty and complexity of both through one simple idea.
The first project that James and Antony worked on together was the Thames River Project. James mentioned his plan to Antony when they first met and Antony travelled to London to join James on this first experimental journey. It was the success and ideas that came out of the Thames River Project that has led to their current undertaking.
Who else is involved?
We are excited to have Mogwai onboard to write the soundtrack for the film, their first since “Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait”. We've already worked with Mogwai and as soon as Antony suggested the idea to the band, they were onboard - more from them soon!
We are also lucky to have Ben Tricklebank involved who will be producing an online experience to complement the films's release, adding further dimension to Hudson River Project. Ben Tricklebank is an award-winning interactive director, and was creative director for Arcade Fire's The Wilderness Downtown, a groundbreaking html5 site.
There are many other people and organisations involved. The Hudson River Foundation have been particularly helpful in introducing us to people and providing us with advice. Every community along the Hudson is full of people that care about the river and we’ll be in touch with them more as we get closer to our production start date.
How is this project going to be funded? What’s the funding for?
We are looking for $100,000 from Kickstarter and will be seeking top up funds from more traditional sources as our campaign unfolds.
The entire shooting process, from day one of collecting materials in Manhattan to James’ return to Battery Park, will take 8 weeks. We will be operating with a minimal crew with Antony shooting most of the footage. However, we want to capture Lake Tear of the Clouds, the Hudson River and New York City in all their captivating beauty, so we’ll also be taking a 2nd camera person with us and we hope to use a helicopter to shoot the higher reaches of the river. We are saving money wherever possible but we want to do the film justice – the budget for the shoot stands at $100,000 but we know what we'd do with another $20,000.
Our post-production budget is $160,000, including everything from the costs involved in Mogwai recording the soundtrack, editing and grading the film properly to an online experience that will work alongside the film, being developed by interactive director Ben Tricklebank.
Our crew are working for subsistence rates and the key collaborators are not taking a fee.
If we raise more than our target we will simply be able to make a better film and deliver you more as part of the final product.
What’s the status of the production?
Antony and James have been working on this film for a year and a half. We have made two scouting trips up and down the river and to the source, located a workshop to build the boat in, met dozens of people who are going to help us make the film and done dummy runs finding materials in New York City. We have a production manager in NYC, we have Ben Tricklebank lined up to build an incredible interactive website that will work alongside the completed film and we’ve also had several discussions with Mogwai who are ready to write a soundtrack as soon as we get send them the first rushes.
The production is ready to start and we have everything in place for a May 2013 delivery of the film.
What are you intentions for the film?
We want as many people as possible to see this film. We will be applying to film festivals but we’ll also be arranging screenings, with Mogwai playing the soundtrack live, in London and New York as soon as we can.

We think that the Hudson River Project is a film for the times we live in and we want to make it this year. We hope you agree, please help us by spreading the word
