An interdisciplinary public art project that transforms a dilapidated houseboat into a studio/gallery/laboratory/school.
HOUSEBOAT seeks to establish an interdisciplinary venue that blurs the lines dividing the creation and exhibition of artwork, as well as those that divide the viewer and the creator. This will be accomplished by transforming the cabin space of a houseboat into a non-traditional art gallery and studio. Artwork will be created in, on, and around the boat, using the boat and the artwork itself as the driving inspiration. The art will be displayed in the boat at a multimedia gallery opening, which will include screening of video documentation of the process. Upon completion of the first iteration of the project, we will drive the boat-gallery into local waterways. The multidisciplinary nature of this project will also have potential to involve other performing or visual art groups. HOUSEBOAT will engage with any communities that it comes in contact with during its travels.
Our project will invigorate and connect the neighborhoods and cultural communities of Baltimore as we invite different schools, organizations and individuals to participate. During the exhibitions and events, HOUSEBOAT will be a central meeting place for members of all neighborhoods of the city. As we travel from city to city, we will create a network of interactions and experiences that will link each and every person that comes into contact with our project. During the process, we will break down the ideas of the "isolated artist" and create a singular, national art community.
FAQ
-
The boat represents ideas of travel and boundless imagination, it harkens back to Baltimore's maritime history, and its unusual appearance in the center of an urban space will attract attention and excitement. Plus, in the future we plan on driving it through waterways, launching it into ports and towing it across the country on a truck when we have to!
We decided on a houseboat due to the large inside cabin that we will convert into a gallery studio space. Sailboats and other smaller boats don't have as much space.
