What happens when mamahood meets Hollywood?

#HollywoodMamas - The Web Documentary

Now is the time to start a conversation with female actors, writers, directors, and producers who are mamas working in Hollywood - representing the good, the bad, and the clever archetypes of American mamahood... on-set and at home.

#HollywoodMamas - The Talent

Summer Lopez Dorst is the filmmaker responsible for #HollywoodMamas.  She is also responsible for balancing her career as a writer and producer while raising her toddler, Parker. While attending USC's School of Cinematic Arts, she produced Pretty Dead Girl, an Official Selection of the Sundance, Tribeca, and AFI Film Festivals.  She probably should be doing some dishes right now, oh well.

Melody Mooney is the star of #HollywoodMamas.  She is an actor working in Hollywood, juggling her career with life as a full-time mama to Ella Rose, who keeps her on her toes.  You may recognize Melody's alter-ego Hygena, star of the popular cable series, Who Wants To Be A Superhero?  She thinks Hollywood's got some explaining to do when it comes to roles for mamas in film and television, starting with day care for day players.

#HollywoodMamas - The Shoot

Six shoot days will follow six weeks of prep.  Production will be dictated by the urgency of the subject matter, the schedules of interview subjects who are professional Hollywood mamas, and the rush to release a relevant counter-point to current cultural discussion of the so-called "mommy wars."  Locations will be determined by the availability and logistics of interview subjects.  Crew will be professionals hailing from the ranks of reality television - devoted to the telling of the #HollywoodMamas story and appropriately compensated for their expertise in Production, Camera, Sound, and Art Direction.  Editorial will match the style of Cinematography, juxtaposing the authenticity of diverse daily lives with slickly manufactured entertainment values.

#HollywoodMamas - The Budget

Transparency is a key component of #HollywoodMamas.  If a backer requests disclosure of how donations will be allocated, a line-item budget will be provided.  Here is a high-level picture of what it will take to finance the web documentary:

-  Talent ($600)
-  Crew  ($3,000)
-  Legal  ($300)
-  Equipment  ($2,000)
-  Shooting  ($1,700)
-  Editorial  ($300)
-  Finishing  ($300)
-  Distribution  ($150)
-  Contingency  ($250)
-  Rewards  ($200)

#HollywoodMamas - The Release

There are no plans for festival, theatrical or broadcast release of #HollywoodMamas.  The narrative structure is designed for digital production.  The marketing strategy is architected for online distribution.  Even the title of the web documentary - #HollywoodMamas - promotes viral release by unleashing the power of social media, where American mamas are not just an audience, but a voice.  An official website for the web documentary is just the beginning... where #HollywoodMamas travels from there will surpass any traditional entertainment market model.  Cool, right?

#HollywoodMamas - The Impact

Imagine watching a television sitcom in which a professional mother brings home the bacon for a stay-at-home father who cares for their special needs kids.  Picture the major motion picture poster for a female action hero who kicks ass and carpools.  Stop wondering why female Hollywood power players are vilified at the supermarket check stand because: They adopted children from developing nations... because they chose not to have children at all... because they breastfeed their children in public... because they chose to become single mothers... on purpose!  #HollywoodMamas dares to ask - what's next for mamas, Hollywood?

FAQ

  • My name Is Summer and I'm a filmmaker and a mama. My friend, Melody, is an actor and a mama. As you might imagine, when mamahood meets Hollywood, things get a little dicey in terms of blending the personal and professional, pursuing our passion and involving our kids in our creative pursuits, and whether any of that makes a difference in how American mamas watch themselves represented on television and in film.  Most importantly, we want to raise awareness and explore roles and representations of mamas in Hollywood and how they hurt or help this cultural moment of the so-called "mommy wars."
