About this project

  • The Play It was a dreary night outside the Villa Diadoti on Lake Geneva in 1816, The Year Without a Summer. Inside, Mary Wollestonecraft Godwin longs for home, domestic stability, and peace of mind. As the storm rages on, Mary is haunted by her history and tormented by those around her. Amidst the chaos on both sides of the villa’s doors Lord Byron issues his infamous challenge to write a ghost story that is both frightening and original. Navigating through phantasms and family, sex and science, Mary births her own hideous progeny and secures her name in ink and immortality.
  • The Project Hideous Progeny closes Holland Production's 5th season. Based on the journals, letters and works of Byron, Percy Shelley and Mary Shelley, Hideous Progeny uncovers the events that would eventually lead Mary to write Frankenstein, one of the most famous novels in the Western canon. The show has come a long way since it's first staged reading at The Burren in Somerville in 2008 - and so has the company. With Hideous Progeny, we're producing our first fully staged period play. The action takes place in 1816 Geneva, so we need to dramatically transform the Boston Playwrights' Theatre into the Swiss countryside. This means building Regency costumes from scratch, constructing a set that evokes a Swiss country house (billiard table included), and employing lighting and sound effects to convince us there is a storm raging outside.
  • Funding We are hoping to raise at least $1000 to go toward our design elements. Your donations would help cover the design and building of two Regency dresses, the aforementioned billiard table, new gels for our lights, and more. If we are able to raise more than $1000, those donations will also go first toward design and then to the production in general.
