About this project

In the tradition of Riot Grrrl zines and inspired by Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues," VAGINA is a DIY collection of images and writing from 10 contributors of various proximities to the vagina. 100 zines will be printed, with only 90 editions available to the public (To signify the mere 90 years women in the United States have had the legal right to vote), and each zine will be hand serialized. Placing an emphasis on the arts and accessibility, each contributor will be paid $50 for his or her work, and the zines will be free in independent book shops or just the cost of shipping through Etsy. They will be printed in the DIY fashion of zines, but with higher quality paper and with cardstock covers. As much as possible, VAGINA will utilize local businesses in its creation. Its cover will feature full page overlapped inverted V's with the word VAGINA, forcing viewers to contend with it bare of all our gender socialized trappings. Through its simplicity, VAGINA aspires to convey a powerful message of acknowledgement, social responsibility, and acceptance without compromise. VAGINA will also act as a communal showcase for young artists who may or may not have the opportunity for exposure otherwise.
