Custom Laser Engraving
Several HAND Stylus backers have expressed a desire for custom laser engraving. While I don't have a final answer for those of you interested in custom laser engraving, here are my thoughts on the subject...
First, when I initiated the HAND Stylus project on Kickstarter, I purposefully offered custom laser engraving only on the three highest levels of support where I felt the extra time, effort, and expense of engraving would be warranted. My design studio has a CO2 laser engraving machine, but it's dedicated to engraving zoo, museum, and aquarium logos onto the lids of the bamboo boxes in which we package all my jewelry designs. So, to do custom laser engraving I would have to work with another company that offers this service. This isn't a problem for large orders. However, individual laser engraving is another story. It turns out, the time to set-up the computer and laser to engrave just one stylus costs more than the engraving, which can be done fairly quickly.
Now that the HAND Stylus project has garnered more pledges than I had anticipated, I'm seriously exploring the possibility of purchasing a laser powerful enough to engrave bare metal. If I buy such a laser, then it opens up the possibility of doing custom laser engraving.
Here's what I have in mind... first, the laser engraving would be FREE, but there would be a one-time $5.00 set-up fee for each name or other custom engraving someone might want. So, for example, if you wanted one HAND Stylus engraved with your name, you would add $5.00 to your order. However, if you wanted two or more styluses engraved with your name, then the duplicate engravings would be free of charge, other than the cost of the additional styluses.
The more support the HAND Stylus project receives, the more likely it is that I'll be able offer custom engraving. Stay tuned... Steve
