A digital design installation by 10 graduate architecture students at a prestigious university in New York City.
The Neon Project is a digitally designed and fabricated public installation created by ten architecture students at a prestigious university in New York City. The Neon Project is being created as part of the Fast Pace / Slow Space course taught here at said prestigious university by two great professors. The course asks students to design a public space for an End of Year Show where student work is on display for the week of May 12, 2012.
The Neon Project is designed as a public mega-furniture installation which invites users to interact with each Neon Pod by entering into one and enjoying a relaxing moment within the hyper pace of New York City and the high energy of the End of Year Show. Each Neon Pod measures approximately 18 feet in diameter and 6 feet tall and can accommodate a group of people in its vertical hammocks. Each Neon Pod is made from digitally fabricated ribs of recycled HDPE plastic woven together with flexible neon cord. The cord which spans the gap between each HDPE rib creates a vertical resting space for the users of the Neon Pod. The construction of each Neon Pod incorporates a flexible joint at the base which allows each rib a 10 degree range of rotation and causes each Pod to react and deform to the bodies it supports.
After the installation in May The Neon Project will be available for re-siting, re-purposing, and re-locating and the Neon Team is very excited about the potential future life of the Neon Project. If you would like more information about the Neon Project or are interested in hosting the project at a gallery, park, or public space please e-mail contact@theneonproject.org. Rendering! Not to worry, plenty of neon to come, it's just red for the moment.

Neon visits ARUP for some structural consulting!
