Growing Pathways is a free, bi-monthly newspaper that connects the urban agriculture community in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.
Growing Pathways newspaper was started with the idea of gathering as much information as possible about the grassroots, local food movement in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) and then making that information available free of charge to our readers. We include good, basic information about growing, sourcing and preparing local food.
Our first edition was put together last spring in less than 30 days so that we could distribute at several spring events in the Twin Cities--The Friends Plant Sale, The Blooms Day Plant Sale and The Powderhorn Mayday Parade. We emptied our piggy banks and printed 10,000 copies that were distributed in 3 weeks at those events, local coffee shops, cafes, events and farmers markets.
The original goal was to publish monthly, but the reality of also working full-time jobs led us to decide that we needed to go to a bi-monthly schedule in order to maintain a quality publication.
We serve as a communication tool for the local food community in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul. This includes growers, distributors, educators, non-profit advocates, grass root activists and businesses that are seeking local foods.
We are dedicated to covering a variety of food-related topics ranging from how to grow, prepare and preserve foods to profiles of food-related projects that deserve community support. We also feature stories of entrepreneurs who are starting and maintaining a food business. Pretty much all the food news, events and information we can cram into our pages.
More than ever, people are recognizing the need to know more about how the food they are eating is produced. By telling the stories of local growers, backyard gardeners, grassroots food justice groups, co-op members, food industry workers, migrant farm workers, and immigrants striving to become growers we will become the source that people will look to for their food news.
Our goal is raise the funds to cover the printing and distribution costs for the next 6 months while we build up an advertising base that will allow us to continue to keep Growing Pathways a free publication. In addition, our website needs a make-over to be more user-friendly and easier to up date information.
Should we exceed our goal, the additional funds will be used to add more pages, and to print and distribute more copies. We will be fully sustainable when we are able to compensate our contributors and staffers who have invested their time because they believe that the time is right for a publication with this focus.
We invite you to visit our website: www.growingpathways.com to take a look at the first 3 editions that have been produced. Please help us to continue publishing as we develop an advertising base that will cover future expenses. Thank you for taking the time to check us out!
