Getting the Groove to New Orleans
Project by Pamela Popeson
I'm a New York City based playwright and for several years I've had the opportunity to take some of my short plays to New Orleans and to work with local actors, directors and other theatre arts folk there at a annual performing arts festival called DramaRama.
This year the stakes are raised (along with the expenses) as we're doing "Groove is in the Heart," a longer work in the New Orleans Fringe Festival.
Groove, is a moderninst chronicling of matters of the heart that is silly and serious, comic but tragic, and both timely and out of time - just like all the great love affairs. It weaves romantic interludes, love sonnets, and legendary love stories together as it flows from first dates to married life and from whispers of sweet nothings to murder and sweet revenge
The play is cast, the scripts have gone out and we have our first all cast and company rehearsal scheduled.
Now I need to raise funds to pay the company members: the actors, stage manager, dresser, designers, etc., and to buy the props and costumes, print postcards, posters, and programs, and house me - the writer and director, in New Orleans for the period of rehearsals and festival performances. There's also that rehearsal space rent and theatrical insurance to be paid, there's a slew of miscellaneous costs - lots of little necessities - things like the backstage water for the actors and local transportation, etc., etc,. etc...
Hope to hear from y'all...
