The Artists
Note: Curators from around the country have already contacted us asking that these works (yet to be made) be exhibited in upcoming shows.
To take directly from his Wikipedia page: In 2009, Ryder Ripps established InternetArchaeology.org, where he currently acts as the director and curator. Ripps started InternetArchaeology.org with the hopes of archiving and presenting content from GeoCities. His work has been compared toCory Arcangel andPaper Rad. He is considered an authority on Animated GIF art. In November 2009, Ripps created a website called Dump.fm, which allows users to use images to communicate and collaborate in real time. Ripps says the site "is an iteration of both the chat room and the image board, as it uses pictures to create conversation." Users upload or link to images or take webcam shots as well as type messages to communicate. It has since become a popular and influential community and is credited for the creation of multipleInternet memes.
Nullsleep (born Jeremiah Johnson October 7, 1980) is an American electronic musician and computer artist currently residing inNew York City. In 1999 he co-founded the low-bit art collective8bitpeoples, and has served as its lead director since its inception. Throughout the early 21st century he has worked to elevatechiptune music to a more reputable status, in spite of its perception as sometimes kitschy or retro. He is best known for his romantic, high-energyGame Boy pop songs. Johnson graduated from theFu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science atColumbia University in 2003, where he studiedcomputer science andmusic. He usesGame Boys andNESconsoles to create "conceptually unique music that blends subversive hardware hacking with powerful melodic pop."
Sara Ludy is a digital artist who studied at School of the Art Institute of Chicago until 2003. After a couple years of hiatus from making art, Ludy has emerged as a force, one who is exploring the possibilities of combining digital art with architecture. In response to the very recent show called Wallpapers at 319 Scholes in Brooklyn, curated by Lindsay Howard, in collaboration with Nicholas Sassoon, Rhizome writer Jason Huff wrote: Despite the minimal color palette and seemingly simple setup, Sassoon and Ludy’s projected gifs are captivating and meditative. They are an undeniable extension of Sassoon’s extensive animated gif collection and Ludy’s videos exploring merging planes of colored architecture.
Sterling Crispin is a prolific artist working across myriad mediums, often marrying installation work with digital elements. Elliot Riis, in 303 magazine, says of Crispin’s work, Many of Crispin’s projects are non-traditional. He uses media and blends their ‘new’ with the ancient mysticism of ‘magic.’ He points to our stage of technological advancement, our limbo of organic and synthetic, even noting Facebook, where “everyone can feel like they’re the center of the universe.” He plays the role of shaman himself, the game genie, where the ‘game’ encompasses ALL, showing meaning as flexible.
