About this project
***While we have reached our minimum goal, we are still taking pre-orders. While the $1,200 you have helped us raise so far has made this record possible, your continued support is greatly appreciated.***
In July 2010, Grandfather is going to Chicago, IL to record their debut LP with engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies) at his studio Electrical Audio.
Famed for his devotion to analog recording methods, Albini’s rigorous, discerning, and maniac fixation on unencumbered sound is precisely what Grandfather seeks out.
There will be no ProTools. No reliance on digital manipulation. No overdubs or other unnecessary obstacles that create unwanted space between the performance and the recording; the listener and the music.
We will be recording directly onto 2" tape through all analog recording gear – much of which is exclusive to Electrical Audio. The benefits of this process are tremendous, not only for pure sonic quality, but for the integrity of the performances.
We feel there is something truly special about a band recording onto tape; with its limited tracks and inimitable warmth. We feel that this unfiltered quality has been lost in the age of modern recording.
As you can imagine, there are tremendous costs associated with this recording process and to date we have sold almost all of our home recording gear to make this happen. We have saved any money possible to pay our way to Chicago and to book time with the best engineer and studio we could find. However, there is one last thing that will make this entire endeavor completely and utterly complete: we need to print a limited run of Vinyl records so that there is a true analog record of our music.
To anyone who is as frustrated as we are with digital recordings, please offer your support to help us make this vinyl run happen. This is the only way to guarantee a pure listening experience, for which we are already going through tremendous labor to document.
If we can raise enough money, we will be able to print up a limited run of 300 vinyl records. While we will also issue the record digital and on CD, we hope to at least provide a select few, an all analog listening experience.
No donation is too small – every single dollar will help us reach our goal. We are confident in this music and absolutely focused on providing the best possible document of our work.
We sincerely appreciate ANY donations, kind words or other forms of support.
Thank you for all your assistance!
Sincerely,
Grandfather

The perfect embodiment of "less is more"; New York based three piece Grandfather fashion dynamic, intense and violently rhythmic psychedelic rock. Far from a traditional power rock trio, the band creates a massive, caterwauling maelstrom from the simple concept of allowing each instrument to reach its sonic peak.
Conjuring the sounds of a band twice its size, their music is ripe with complex melodies and a lockstep rhythm section (Josh Hoffman, Jonathan Silverman), set against the tempestuous, experimental guitar playing of Michael Kirsch. Lead vocal duties are also fronted by Josh Hoffman, their energetic heavy-hitting drummer, and provide an aching, emotional fragility to their music. The result is an otherworldly sound - one eager to brashly burst at the seams with razor sharp stabs of feedback and an aggressive rhythmic attack; yet delicate and mature enough to pack a stunning emotional heft.
Well known across New York City for their onstage intensity, buzz-saw-like precision and confidently brutal live shows the band is eager to tour North America this summer. They are currently set to record their debut record, "Why I'd Try" in July, 2010 in Chicago with stalwart engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies). Firm believers in the raw, unencumbered sound of the analog recording process, the band aims to pair their frenetic, live-in-the-room intensity with the tried and true ears of Albini to create a singular, ruminative and altogether bracing record.
