Hi - I'm Gordon Withers, a rock cellist. In June of this year, my brother Stephen and I recorded an album together - something we've been waiting years to do. The stars aligned: Stephen could spend a week and bring his drum kit, and famed producer J. Robbins was available to record us. We recorded six originals, and a bunch of covers, five of which made the final album.

The album is finished - but it still needs to be mastered, produced, and released. The original budget was spent on recording (and it was well worth it), but I'd actually like to put it out this year.

You can get a sneak peek of the album on my Bandcamp page. I've decided to pay for the mastering, production, and limited publicity by taking pre-orders here. If enough people pre-order the album, or even just contribute a dollar or two, the album will come out in November! It will be released on vinyl, CD, and mp3. The vinyl version will be the real deal - it will come with a digital download of the entire album, a download code for two exclusive bonus tracks, and cover art designed by Pittsburgh avant-garde artist Dave Gonzalez. I have estimated that $2,500 will cover the mastering, printing 100 vinyl copies, about 300 CD's, packaging, and a limited publicity campaign.

You have eight options:

$1 gets you eternal gratitude and a thank-you in the liner notes.

$5 gets you a digital download of the album from Bandcamp 1 week before the release date.

$8 gets you the CD.

$10 gets you the vinyl + download code for the album + 2 exclusive bonus tracks (download)

$50 gets you the vinyl + both downloads (+CD if you want it) + a cello-ized song of your choice!! (see rules below) OR

$50 gets you the vinyl + both downloads (+CD if you want it) + a totally original piece of art from album cover artist Dave Gonzalez (see rules below)

$100 gets you the vinyl + both downloads (+CD if you want it) + a cello-ized song of your choice + a totally original piece of art from album cover artist Dave Gonzalez (see rules below)

$500 gets you everything above, plus an in-house concert for you & your friends (see rules below)

The $100 option or either of the $50 options would make an incredible holiday gift for someone. I guarantee there is no chance of getting anything like this anywhere, especially at this price.

[ Note: For all donations - every 20th donation receives a special, secret, surprise piece of art!! ]

RULES FOR CUSTOM SONGS, ART, AND CONCERTS:
For cello-ized songs: you pick the song, I arrange and record a cello version of it! The recordings will be demo quality, done on my 4-track cassette recorder (for an example of the quality, see some old demos I did). It's your choice to receive the final recording on cassette, CD, or mp3 (or all three). I reserve the right to reject your choice of song if it is a) too difficult to arrange (unlikely), or b) already has a lot of strings/cellos in the original recording (more likely). In either case, I'll work with you to find a more suitable song.

For Dave's original art - these are not commissions. This is an original piece that Dave will choose to make for you. It could be a drawing, a painting, or an insane drinking glass. Whatever it is, it will be amazing and one-of-a-kind.

For in-house concerts: This will be an approx. 90-minute solo cello concert. Travel is free within 50 miles of Alexandria, VA. Beyond that, you will need to pay travel expenses. The concert will consist of one of the six Bach cello suites (your choice - and yes, I can do #6, but it's grueling), 1-2 other classical pieces of my choosing, and a small assortment of requests to be worked-out in advance. Every effort will be made to schedule this concert for November or December of 2009, but please allow flexibility if our schedules don't align easily. I'll also give you a cello lesson if you would like one.
