Any updates on progress? Any idea when we might see a finished release, both in PDF and hard copy formats?

It seemed that the PDF was almost ready at GenCon 2011. After the PDF is completed - and what is the newest expected time frame - how long afterwards will the printed version be available?

    3. Fatbeard_logo_only_.thumb
Gary M. Sarli on December 1

For the most part, things are going OK. Jack (developer) has been having some serious problems that have virtually made this a one-man show. The goal of having the PDF ready by mid-December is looking harder and harder to hit right now, but I'm seeing what I can do to get there.

Sorry for the delayed response -- I've been a bit buried. But I have some good news for you: I just finished e20 Lite v.0.5, which you can download here: http://bit.ly/gO4W6e

I'll have many more updates coming in quick succession as we lunge toward the finish line. :)

@Gary: Fair enough, I'm no expert on IP issues, but you are most likely correct. BTW, I think that it is very useful to have those comparisons in the document, I was merely worried that they might be "problematic" :-)

    10. Fatbeard_logo_only_.thumb
      Gary M. Sarli on March 16, 2010

      @Emiliano: Good question!

The OGL says I can't indicate "compatibility or co-adaptability" with any trademark. When I mention D&D, SW, etc. in e20 Lite, it's to use them as a point of reference for comparison and contrast, but -- at least the way I understand it -- that doesn't seem to really qualify as claiming "compatibility or co-adaptability." In fact, since I'm pointing out all the ways things are *different*, it's almost the opposite! :-)

    11. Fb_profile_picture.thumb
Emiliano Marchetti on March 16, 2010

e20 (or at least the light version) uses the OGL. Wouldn't that prevent the explicit naming of other trademarks such as D&D and SW?

@Bender: It was somebody after me, 'cause I was tempted (yes, for the twi'lek) but didn't see a way to take time off for GenCon. The VIP package was still available when I pledged. My guess is it was somebody who pledged after the 10th.

    22. Fatbeard_logo_only_.thumb
      Gary M. Sarli on March 7, 2010

Shane: You don't make two separate pledges, but you do get a "Manage Your Pledge" button where you can change your pledge amount and select a different reward level. The button should be visible over on the right side of the screen.

P.S. If this does make it over $10k, I can still get it in within 8 days, or does it cap at $10k and closes? Just wanted to be sure so I'm not left out. :D

    27. Fatbeard_logo_only_.thumb
      Gary M. Sarli on March 7, 2010

      @ Patrick:

I can probably have some sort of option to expand pledges later on, most likely through my online store. I'd have to work out a lot of details to figure out how best to do that, but I can probably do something like that eventually.

(Don't get your heart set on it, though, because there might be some issue I'm not thinking of that keeps it from happening! Still, I'd say it's at least even odds.)

      Gary M. Sarli on March 7, 2010

Hi Gregg! Just to echo what Brian just said, the $20 is all you have to put in -- there's no additional fee or anything else expected from anyone.

The $1/month thing was just to put the most basic $20 pledge into perspective: $10 for the PDF of the rulebook (its expected retail price), and $10 for (roughly) 10 months of inside access to the development process (which works out to an average of $1/month).

Thanks for your interest, and let us know if you have any other questions!

    33. B6_final03-2.thumb
      Brian E. Harris on March 7, 2010

Hey Gregg! The $1/month is part of a marketing blurb - if you pledge $20, you get the PDF ($10 value), and you get access to the development process, which, at the time the blurb was written, was likely to last about 10 months - hence, it would come out to $1/month (the remaining $10 of your $20 pledge).

    34. Greggbodhi.thumb
Gregg Bender on March 7, 2010

Question. I'm on the fence thinking about this (as some of you know I toss a big hand in P20 Mod)...what's this I keep hearing about a $1/month for something-something? I'm not reading it on here or the FAQ. Just making sure that when I throw in my 50 or 100 bones that there's nothing else expected in addition. Thanks!

Have faith; we can do this. I will try and get my fellow nerds... er... "d20 enthusiasts" to help out too. D&D, d20 Modern, and SWSE have really helped bring my friends closer together, as well as helped bring some of the kids down at the youth center out of their shells. It’s a little easier to face the horrors of being a teenager when you and your friends just took down a terrifying dragon or broke up an evil corporation's plot to rule the world. This will be a cakewalk. *handheart*

You will see exclusive previews, design essays, and playtest materials that are unavailable to non-patrons. (If you participate in playtesting, you will receive a "Playtesting" credit in the book.) Finally, you will receive a PDF of the final manuscript and print-on-demand access before the book is available to the public.

Pledge $50 or more

50 Backers

As above, but you also receive a hardcover copy of the final book.

Pledge $100 or more

39 Backers • Limited Reward (31 of 70 remaining)

As above, but your hardcover copy of the book is autographed by the lead designer. You also have access to the "Senior Patrons" forums, allowing the opportunity to contribute to the rules development at virtually every stage of the process. In addition, you can propose, design, and submit game material (subject to available space and the approval of other senior patrons). If accepted, you are be paid at the same rate as our other freelancers, and given an "Additional Design" credit in the book; furthermore, all senior patrons who contribute design work will automatically be considered for available freelance work on future game supplements.

Pledge $200 or more

27 Backers • Limited Reward (3 of 30 remaining)

As above, but you will receive a total of three autographed hardcover copies of the final rulebook (great gifts for your fellow gamers, or useful as extra copies to keep at the game table!). Furthermore, you are invited to join exclusive conference calls with the lead designer several times during the development process, discussing design goals, brainstorming, and making proposals in real time. Finally, in August, you are guaranteed a slot to attend the game's premiere event at Gen Con 2010 in Indianapolis and an invitation to an exclusive afterparty. (If you won't be attending the convention, you are free to give your spot to anyone you wish; any unfilled slots will be made available to all Gen Con attendees on a first-come, first-served basis.)

Pledge $1,500 or more

1 Backer SOLD OUT (0 of 1 remaining)

VIP (Very Important Patron) Level: You get everything listed at the $200 level, plus we buy you an airline ticket (US lower 48 states only -- but see below) and a 4-day convention badge to come with us to Gen Con in Indianapolis, August 5-8, 2010. You share a hotel room with me and 2-3 others in my Gen Con crew (most likely my poster/t-shirt printing specialist and my blue Twi'lek "booth babe"), and you party like a game designer (see below) for five glorious nights. The only thing you need is spending money for food and shopping; we'll even pick you up at the airport! ACCOMMODATIONS: We are staying in the Marriott Downtown Indianapolis, directly across the street from the exhibit hall at the convention center (and we even have an elevated skywalk that connects us so we don't even have to cross the street!). Keep in mind, though, you'll be attending the convention the same way we do: Cramming as many people as possible into each hotel room. I will give the owner of the VIP package the option to pick a bed all their own, though, and I hereby volunteer to sleep on the air mattress if no one else will! FLIGHT: As mentioned, the offer is limited to the lower 48 US states just to keep the costs reasonable -- Alaska, Hawaii, and most international flights would cost an arm and a leg. If you're really, really interested and you're coming from farther away, I would chip in the first $300 of the ticket if you're willing to spring for the rest. "PARTYING LIKE A GAME DESIGNER": Game designers don't party very well (we're all socially awkward nerds), but we are prone to playing pick-up games at night in the hotel room. (And drinking. We do tend to drink.)
