The Waiting Game

Once again, I'm terribly sorry that the book is so far behind schedule, but here is an update:

Round One of proofreading (thanks to backer Frank Sugino) is complete. We'll be giving it another pass or two, and I'm looking to enlist one or two other sets of eyes (experienced, professional proofreaders or editors interested in bartering for your skillz, contact me!) before calling the book 100% done.

Beyond that, I am still in a back and forth with my distributor, trying to nail down a final print run (which will impact the final cover price). This process is going slower than I'd like. Unfortunately, in order to save money on shipping (in the order of hundreds of dollars), I need to time the printing with the public availability date, so I still don't know how soon the book will be in YOUR hands. (Backers WILL get the books in advance of the bookstores or comics shops, though, come hell or high water.)

I will be sending out the backer surveys soon in order to collect addresses and names (how you want them to appear in the book's Acknowledgements section), etc.! I got some responses to these surveys as much as two and a half years AFTER the first book was published (I'm not even kidding), which is insane. Respond to them promptly, please? :)

Multiplex: There and Back Again final cover

I've shown works in progress for the last few days, but I finally have the Book 2 cover done (I think). Any changes at this point should be relatively minor.

I've got a proofreader on the book, and I'm conferring with my distributor about print runs and things like that, so hopefully I'll be able to get everything totally polished up and ready for press in the next couple of months. (Yeah, it takes that long when you're dealing with distribution companies — which I wasn't for book one.) Hopefully the book will be out this summer or in the fall at the latest. There's a good chance I'll be able to ship them off to you Kickstarter backers a little before the "street date," though.

Other than that last-minute technical stuff, though, Book 2 is DONE. It took a little longer than I had hoped (sorry) but now all I have left to do is get those Kickstarter rewards going.

It has been a couple of months, sorry. I failed to finish the book over winter break, obviously, or you would have known already. BUT the interior of the book is 99.9% done. I have one illustration for the Bonus Materials section left to do, which I'd actually forgotten about (oops), and then the rest of the work on the interior is boring stuff: a couple of rounds of proofreading and double- & triple-checking some technical details.

Then there's the cover. If you've been following me on Facebook or Twitter, you'd know I've had some creative blocks with it, even going as far as to try to hire a much-more-talented-than-me illustrator friend of mine to help with it… and then she couldn't come up with anything, either. So just-me took another stab at it, and I think I have a direction I like, and so that is what I'll be doing over spring break next week.

I had hoped (and mentioned in a previous update) that I would be adding one of the Stripped Books to the Book 2 collection, which would have increased the page count to 224 from the 208 it was when you guys all pledged. That is more of a "maybe" now. Truthfully, cost will be the deciding factor. If I can keep the unit cost down, I'll keep it in; otherwise, it'll have to go. Since I need to drop a couple of other extras beyond the Stripped Books comic to account for a 16 page signature, it's something I'd really like to keep in.

Once the book is done, I'll get cranking on printing estimates and wheelings & dealings with my distributor and things like that — and working on the non-book-related pledge incentives, of course. So while the initial delivery estimates of March or April 2013 are… uh… definitely not happening (sorry!), I'm now hoping for a ship date for all the Kickstarter books and incentives in June or July, I'm guessing.

Chapter 10 eBook Now Available

Well, this is embarrassing. Last semester, I ended up getting swamped after finishing the Chapter 10 eBook, and then I managed to forget that it wasn't available.

So… this is a couple of months overdue, but the Chapter 10 eBook is now available for purchase. If you have a copy coming to you through your Kickstarter rewards OR the Book 2 Project, you should have received an e-mail by now (or should soon) about how to get it. I've already gotten one e-mail bounced back, so c'mon guys, be sure your e-mail addresses are up to date.

I only have a little bit of work left for Book 2, but they're big ones: a "Previously In Multiplex" section recapping Book 1 and (re-)introducing the characters for new readers, and the cover. I hope to get that done before school starts up again.
