I've been doing Multiplex — an online comic strip about life at a movie theater — on the interweb for over four years now, and one question I keep getting asked is, "When are you going to do a print book?"
The answer is, "I'm already working on it!" But in order to put together the best book possible, I needed to touch up the art in a few of the oldest strips and create a lot of new material to fill out gaps in the page layout and flesh out the story a little bit — and that requires a lot of time.… Time that being a full-time freelancer (no paid vacation!) does not grant me enough of.
Enter: Kickstarter. By pledging and joining the Multiplex: Book 1 Club of Awesome, you get Fun! Rewards! in exchange for buying me the time to complete the copious amounts of new material for the Multiplex book and help me fund the print run of the book itself — and if you pledge a bit extra, you can even get drawn into the prequel story or get hand-drawn sketches! Backers will also get status updates on my progress as I work on the book, advance peeks at the new material produced for the book — and who knows what else? Exclusive bonus strips? Discounts on Multiplex Store merchandise? You'll have to pledge to find out!
For a taste of what the print book will be like, hop over to the Multiplex site and check out the Multiplex: Chapter 1 eBook (requires Flash). Multiplex: Book 1 will be comprised of the first five "Chapter" eBooks — collecting a total of the first 102 strips, character bios for the main cast, and tons of bonus strips — PLUS, an all-new exclusive "prequel" story set before Multiplex #1 and revolving around the release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. The book will be oversized at approximately 8" x 10.5" and run about 196 pages in length.
As for a time frame, I can't get more specific than "as soon as possible." I'd love to have it finished in time for C2E2 in April, but that seems unlikely, because of how much time it will take to finish the new material and get it all printed up. I would like it ready in time for the Windy City Comicon in September, 2010, at the absolute latest, though. However long it takes, pledgers will be kept in the loop at every stage of the process!
Thank you!

Notes about Backer Rewards:
• As a thank you for making any pledge at all, you will receive free copies of the first two Multiplex eBooks! You can get a coupon code for the first eBook by using the coupon code in the first backers-only update post at the Multiplex Store.) A code for the second eBook will be posted as well, when the book is available (hopefully sometime next month).
• Since I can't edit the reward descriptions, I wanted to add that for the character sketch ($100 level and up), you may also request a non-Multiplex character, or maybe a Multiplex character dressed up as a non-Multiplex character. I'm flexible.
Non-US/Canada backers, please add the following amounts for shipping:
$30 pledge = add $10
$50–200 pledges = add $15
$400 pledge = add $20
Project location: Chicago, IL
All $5 pledgers and up will get their name on a special thank-you page of the Multiplex print book — and, you'll get free copies of all five Multiplex eBooks as they are released.
A thank you in the eBook, the five Chapter eBooks, plus a signed copy of the Multiplex: Book 1 print collection when the book is released, with free delivery anywhere in the US or Canada!
All of the above, plus a limited-edition Multiplex T-shirt, with free delivery anywhere in the US or Canada!
All of the above, plus a hand-drawn sketch of any Multiplex character you want!
All of the above, plus a cameo appearance by YOU (or someone you know and love) as an "extra" in the exclusive prequel story in the Multiplex print book. Since I can't guarantee that you'll be seen very large in the printed book, I'll toss in JPGs of yourself as you appear in the book to use as your online avatar at Facebook, Twitter, or wherever.
All of the above, plus absolutely unique, all-new hand-drawn one-page comic strip (Multiplex or otherwise) about any subject you want. Yes, you keep the original artwork!
