About this project

Murder! A Love Story goes into production on July 23 and shoots for nine days. That seems like a really short time, but I wrote this screenplay specifically to be shot on a small budget in a short time frame. This plan has two things going for it:

1) The story is very character-based, and most of the movie is simple dialogue between a few characters. It's a murder-mystery/romantic-comedy about a high school photographer living in a hotel who simultaneously grapples with a strange disappearance and the unrequited love of her best friend. You can visit the Story Page of the film's website to read a longer synopsis.

2) The whole film takes place in a hotel: The Westminster Hotel, a gorgeous historical building recently renovated by Grace College, my alma mater. The college has very generously allowed us access to the entire building, which means we'll never be slowed down by loading and unloading equipment to change locations.

My crew and I are borrowing most of the equipment needed to shoot the film. Everyone, cast and crew, will be working for deferred pay. They're a scrappy bunch, and very enthusiastic, so I know they'll do a terrific job.

We do have some unavoidable hard costs, though—and that's where you come in. If you decide to support Murder! A Love Story, we'll use the funds for things like feeding the cast and crew, finding the actors a place to live while they're in town, and securing liability insurance so Grace College can allow us to shoot inside their beautiful, expensive building. We'll also buy a few hard drives for storing all the digital footage we'll shoot.

I hope you'll consider contributing to our film. The people who have already gotten involved are very excited, and with your help I feel confident we can make something we'll all be proud of.

Ryan Stauffer has completed several scripts, ranging from an unmarketable supernatural drama to (most recently) a much more commercial action/romantic-comedy. Along the way he’s shot, directed and edited short films, promotional material and inspirational content.

Ryan recently spent two years in Los Angeles working various production gigs anywhere in scale from "no one will ever hear about this" to "I can’t believe I’m standing next to Kiefer Sutherland." Now back home in the Midwest, he feels it’s time to stop writing and start shooting.
