With 4 days left to go, we thought we can answer some frequent questions we get about Octopus City Blues and the campaign. But before we do that, we would like to share the results of the last live stream with you. We've got some wonderful suggestions from the fans, and Marina made detailed concepts of how they could look in the game.
You can watch sped up videos of the process below:
And now, the frequently asked questions! Spanish-speaking fans can find some of these questions and others answered on Marina's blog.
Can I still get the limited rewards (e.g. useless NPC) if I select a higher tier (e.g.physical game)?
Yes! All tiers include the rewards of lower tiers. We've limited some rewards because of limitation in producing them or for game design reasons, but we did take into account people with higher tiers. After all, why would we make you choose between paying us more or getting a better reward? An amoral corporation like ours would do anything to make you happy...
Can I still back the game after the Kickstarter?
We're thinking of allowing pre-orders via PayPal after the Kickstarter. It will be limited to certain tiers and rewards (nothing physical or limited) and we might find a way to allow add-ons if you already backed the game. Again, whenever you come up with a question like that, please take a moment and read our mission statement. We are very straight-forward about our goals and ambitions.
Why are you called Ghost in a Bottle?
A few years ago people used to sell physical bottles on eBay with weird stuff in them as 'ghosts in bottles'. It was a pretty fun scam where they'd write up spooky ghost stories about the bottle and sell it for $5. This fits nicely with our corporate goals and represents the quality of our products. Or maybe we just picked the name because it enables us to have the best logo animation in human history:
What software do you use?
When is the game coming out?
We hope to release a demo this year, and the full game next year. We will talk about our plans soon, but beta testers will have access to an alpha version, followed by early access to the demo and the full game.
Do you plan to release the game on consoles?
We would like as many people as possible to play OCB, so we would definitely look into other platforms. However, at the moment our primary focus is the PC version. We've added a stretch goal for mobile versions because the process for publishing on these devices is generally simpler than home consoles, but we can't add stretch goals for something we can't guarantee. If anyone from Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft is reading this and wants to send us free devkits then please go ahead, we think we can utilize the horsepower and cloud-computing capabilities of next-gen consoles to render even more realistic tentacles.
What about Steam?
We would love to have the game on Steam and other markets. We're just waiting to have something more substantial (like a demo) before we go ahead with Greenlight.
How long is Octopus City Blues?
That's a difficult question. It depends on how much optional content we can add to the game and that depends on funding and time. With that said, we estimate it'd take 5-6 hours to complete. The game is similar in size to something like Day of the Tentacle, but our game might be shorter because we don't like ridiculous puzzles. (If that upsets you, please remember that we still have the advantage when it comes to tentacle count)
Can you talk about the gameplay?
We did talk about the gameplay on the Kickstarter page. Basically, Octopus City Blues is an adventure game where you control Kaf Kafkaryan and interact with people. You can equip and use items, and you can record pieces of knowledge in your diary. Most NPCs have daily schedules and the city slowly changes as you progress.
There is a stress and guilt management system, but you aren't punished for ignoring it, instead the game will play differently and you might unlock (or miss) certain scenarios. Kaf has weird dreams and many of them will have simple mini-games (which you can always skip), and you can also play arcade games thanks to our latest stretch goal. You never die in Octopus City Blues, but dumb choices will have consequences.
What about the story?
We'd rather not talk about the story details yet. Trust us, you'll like the demo and the full game more if we didn't spoil it. Suffice to say, we put a lot of emphasis on narrative and the city will have many interesting characters with dark secrets to uncover.
Did you know your reward tiers are reversed?
We get this question a lot! We know about this issue. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it now. Our CEO will have to spend the evening and play Monopoly with some rich people who can afford to fly to Kuwait and pay him for dinner. Don't worry about us, our CEO has been practicing his Monopoly skills over the last month. If he's as good as he claims, your money won't be spent buying someone food in a cheap restaurant.
