About this project
My name is Gregory Crafts and I am the writer of a new play titled Friends Like These. I am fortunate enough that my show was one of 200 productions (out of over 5,000 submissions) accepted into the 2010 New York International Fringe Festival. I have been working for the past eight months to raise over $10,000 for two productions of the show this year; one at the first-ever Hollywood Fringe Festival and one at FringeNYC. My team and I have almost hit our overall goal, and now we're working to raise the last bit to cover travel and production expenses for FringeNYC. We need $2,500 to help pay for food and lodging for the cast and crew for the duration of our run at the festival. Any funds raised over the goal will be applied towards additional marketing and production expenses.
About the Production: After playing to sold out crowds in both 2009 and early 2010, earning endorsements from Los Angeles press and critics (including a “GO!” from LA Weekly), a nomination for Best Ensemble Cast at the local Artistic Director Achievement Awards, featured participation in the first-ever Hollywood Fringe Festival and a nomination for Overall Outstanding Contribution to Theatre in Los Angeles by LA Theatre Review, the original piece Friends Like These is headed to New York, taking part in the acclaimed New York International Fringe Festival.
A new work that first debuted last fall with Theatre Unleashed, Friends Like These takes a candid and poignant look at the staggering issue of violence in our high schools. Garrett is an outsider who spends most of his troubled existence in a fantasy world called Haven…that is until he meets Nicole, the popular cheerleader with a curious mind. As quickly as things begin looking up for Garrett, they come crashing down, forcing him to face both his past mistakes and his harsh present reality while he struggles for redemption. This gut-wrenching piece unswervingly explores the emotional trauma brought on by social mores during high school, forcing a confrontation with the causes and tragic consequences that left us staggered as a nation during Columbine and other high school shootings.
