GCO embarks on the 2012-13 season as we establish ourselves as an independent nonprofit organization.
GCO is Stepping Out!
We are embarking on our third full concert season as the Gateway Chamber Orchestra moves out from under the auspices of Austin Peay State University and establishing ourselves as a newly minted nonprofit organization. With this new direction and our most ambitious season program to date, we are looking to develop new audiences, discover new fans and supporters, and engage hundreds of additional students at underserved schools. Your support will help fund the costs of hiring musicians and acclaimed guests artists, obtaining materials and rights to perform works by contemporary American composers, and facilitating our educational outreach programs. This season, we will feature works by American composers Aaron Jay Kernis, Michael Torke, and John Adams. For our educational outreach, we will not only visit several public schools in the region, but we will also bring in hundreds of students for free school performances of HK Gruber's Frankenstein!!, involving a collection toy instruments, combined with a spectacular visual presentation by artists Black & Jones. While our Kickstarter goal is $5000, any additional funds we raise will help broaden our impact on the community and beyond by sponsoring additional musicians' fees for performances and outreach programs.

The Gateway Chamber Orchestra is quickly emerging as one of America's leading ensembles. Conducted by Gregory Wolynec, the GCO presents inspired programs pairing beloved masterworks with pieces that time may have overlooked, alongside the greatest works of today's leading American composers. The ensemble gave its debut in the fall of 2008 and is comprised of the talented performance faculty of Austin Peay State University (APSU) and fellow professional musicians from Nashville and beyond.
The GCO is dedicated to developing new audiences through educational outreach. The Gateway Concert Experience, which has reached over 2000 underserved students since its inception in 2010, engages students in hands-on activities to develop an understanding and appreciation for a variety of musical genres and styles. Through donor assistance, hundreds of students and their directors have had the opportunity to attend subscription programs free of charge.
Hailed by Fanfare Magazine as "a top-notch performing ensemble that now enters the big leagues", we have released two critically acclaimed recordings. "A pleasure to listen to" and featuring "beautiful oboe and clarinet solos [that] come out of nowhere as if radiant beams of sunshine after a summer shower..." (American Record Guide), the Wind Serenades CD (March 2010) was nominated for a GRAMMY©. In its newest CD release, Chamber Symphonies (May 2012), the GCO was has been praised on SA-CD.net as "...enthusiastic and deeply involved in these Chamber Symphonies [of Enescu, Schreker, and Schoenberg], and given the wonderful sound, it could be hard to pass this disc by." Through our distinguished recordings, the GCO has continued to gain international acclaim bringing attention to our community.
This spring the new Gateway Chamber Orchestra Foundation was created with a board of directors charged with helping develop the GCO in the months and years ahead. APSU has been a tremendous supporter for us through these formative years and we look forward to their continuing support as we go forward.
The 2012-13 Season
This season is going to be our most exciting yet. Our four traditional concerts in the Music/Mass Communication Concert Hall at Austin Peay State University will pair beloved symphonies of Beethoven, Haydn and Mahler with overlooked treasures by Mendelssohn and Reinecke. The orchestra’s dedication to American music can be seen in approachable works by leading composers Torke, Adams and Kernis. Visual artists Black & Jones will bring their own brand of excitement to HK Gruber’s entertaining Frankenstein!!. A new Holiday tradition also starts with a performance of Baroque classics at the Madison Street United Methodist Church. Our season will culminate with the GCO's first performance of a work by Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth). We hope you will join us and support Clarksville's Gateway Chamber Orchestra for our exciting third season!

Collaborators and Guest Artists
With our exciting program lineup for the 2012-13 Season, we are thrilled to announce our esteemed collaborators and guests artists:
The visual arts team Black & Jones (Kell Black and Barry Jones) will add a new dimension to our performance of HK Gruber's Frankenstein!! with a stunning presentation of visual images involving real-time manipulation with Wii controllers. Tenor Thomas King (Professor of Voice at APSU) will perform the role of the chansonnier in this "pan-demonium".
Cellist Michael Samis (co-principal cellist of the GCO) will be featured as soloist in the American premiere of the Cello Concert, op. 80 by Romantic composer Carl Reinecke (1824-1910).
Internationally acclaimed singers, mezzo-soprano Teressa Buchholz and tenor Erik Nelson Werner, will join us for Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) in an intimately scored chamber orchestra version. One of Mahler's last and most personal works, Das Lied is a moving contemplation on life, death, and salvation.
Regarding our nonprofit and tax-deductible donations
The Gateway Chamber Orchestra starts an exciting new chapter in 2012-13. During the spring of 2012 a new Board of Directors was elected who enacted by-laws, registered with the State of Tennessee as a nonprofit corporation, and filed federal paperwork for 501(c)3 status. Until the IRS makes a determination on our request for tax exempt status, the GCO cannot guarantee donations will be tax deductible. It is anticipated that the GCO's tax exempt status will be in place this fall, making contributions tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
We are sincerely grateful for your support!
