Shantell Martin and Liz Armstrong

Has not connected their Facebook account.

Shantell Martin expands conventional definitions of drawing, pioneering an area that combines improvised stream-of-consciousness live illustration and its intricate and complex relationship to music. By using an electronic tablet that works like a grown-up Etch-a-Sketch and allows her to literally draw with light, her performances promote serendipity and audience interaction.

With the simplicty of pen and paper she creates delicate, intricate, and ever-changing otherworldly landscapes populated with quasi-humans and other almost-but-not-quite-familiar creatures, which themselves seem to be continually engaged in the process of evolving into something else. She recently relocated to New York from Tokyo, where she collaborated with musicians, DJs, and designers and garnered a number of industry awards for her unique and fluid illustrations.

Liz Armstrong’s an accomplished writer who’s constantly thrilled by the hilariously strange and deeply wonderful world we live in, and she loves how everyone has something worthwhile to say about it. A former editor at Vice magazine and columnist and longtime freelance writer for the Chicago Reader, she believes we’re all connected through our stories, which she likes to tell in a sparkling, irreverent manner.

Besides her posts at Vice and the Reader, she’s been published all over the place, including New York magazine, Village Voice, Hint, Missbehave, Star, Jalouse, Blender, Las Vegas Weekly, Seventeen, K48, Lumpen, Real Groove, Amsterdam Weekly, Las Vegas Home & Design, Select, Swingset, Rollerderby, and Hit It or Quit It. She’s lectured at universities and colleges in Chicago, been a guest host on MTV Australia, dubbed a notable local by the Chicago Historical Society, and had an honorable mention in one of the annual Da Capo Best Music Writing anthologies.
