Goal Reached: SUPER COMBO FINISH!
September 1st, 2013.
Backers/Supporters/Gamers: We did it. We really did! Trying to respond to all emails and well done messages — THANK YOU, we did it together. It's amazing to see that so many people believe in an idea, and a culture that the idea came from — and decided to jump in and help make it happen.
It's been an emotional month, in many ways. We have always had faith in the project, and have been fortunate enough to not only know so many amazing people with crazy talent, but to attract them too. Looking around on the internet, it's easy to see how hard it can be to run a Kickstarter, but it's not until that moment, when you're in the middle of one, that you realise how true that really is. It tested every single part of our being — mind and body! From a good start to the predicted 'mid Kickstarter lull', to the final 'OH MY GOD IT"S BLOWING UP' period, it's had us in twists. But we loved it!
Unfortunately, I (Matt) have been working this final week in NY, so the final hours although celebrated, where not together :( . We would love to post a picture of the final countdown, but it's midnight in the UK right now and Emma will be in bed! So I grabbed this image from the very moment we pressed the GO button, 32 days ago, which carries the same, happy, thankful meaning:
Said it a million times already, across posts and updates and tweets — but thank you. It's been weird reading posts saying 'A book by Matthew' — it isn't that, it's a book by us all. I'd like to thank you all one last (well, maybe last) time for supporting this. Shout out to everybody who wrote about it (and Kotaku for making it go mental at the end), all the tweet makers, facebook posters and e-mail senders for spreading the world and telling us to go for it. Special thanks to close friends and idols for going crazy pushing this out — Shaun Inman, Daniel Howells, Daniel Gray, Mike Sullivan, Darren Wall, Eject EP, Jamie Adenuga, James Sanderson and Lee Goater — your endless push no doubt helped this massively.
We checked out with 782 Backers, representing 137% of the goal and pledging £35,737 — crazy. Absolutely scared about launching without any contingency, and that international postage was going to kill us. This over the top goal should help with that — and anything left will be used to make the book it can be. Can't wait to design this fully out now!
9,489 people watched the video, with 32% of people watching it the whole way through. I'm guessing people finished it just before the end on the end titles, but maybe not!
Our biggest pledge was the book — and we are over the moon with this. It was the main reason for the Kickstarter, and we are glad that it will get in so many peoples hands. Seriously looking forward to the pixel poster concept coming together that will be in the boxed sets — and now at the end, we have a definitive hi-score list!
URL wise, 78% of all backers came externally (no doubt from all the help pushing this out) with the largest referrer being Kotaku at a massive 15%.
We will post an update with full stats that will give insight to this project, but hopefully help any others who are thinking of doing a Kickstarter. We thought we knew it all (about KS) before the project after reading so long — but we learned about 300% more actually doing it!
So — we are going to celebrate the game. We are going to make a stunning book. I was going to post it before, but thought it was a tad personal and could be seen as a plee for more pledges, but now at the end, I think it's a good little thing to share. Emma and I are having a baby, and had only found out just before we launched the Kickstarter. I think what the book will be, taking a snapshot of video game culture up to 2013, will not only be a great achievement for us all, but also something we can pass on to the baby and say — this is what gaming is and was, just before you came along.
We will be speaking to the printers after next week to make a full, tight plan that looks at everything that needs producing. Budget pending (and no promises) we might have a little mini-book in the works that will come with every printed book (and upwards).
On top of the production plan, we need to figure timescales for design planning, interviews, submitted work curation and actual design. It is our plan to keep you informed every step of the way. There will be times where backer input could be brilliant (thinking of a range of t-shirt options for instance), so keep a look out for updates on here and on gamepaused.net
Anybody who has submitted work - don't worry - we are receiving it all, but haven't had chance to reply to everybody yet. We will push out details throughout the coming weeks. The deadline for submissions is tomorrow — but we will be designing this through December - so if you have something, surprise us!
Thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks. We promise to make this the best we can, and hopefully, one of the best books on gaming out there!
Every Day is Play.
Matt & Emma!
