Pays for printing/distribution of Galloping to Freedom: Saving America's Wild Horses, about new solutions for saving our wild horses
America’s wild horse herds are in jeopardy of extinction, and I present new solutions in my new book, Galloping to Freedom: Saving America’s Wild Horses. My Kickstarter campaign will raise money for the book’s printing and distribution. I am no stranger to publishing: my first book, Wild Hoofbeats: America’s Vanishing Wild Horses, is an award winning book first published in 2008 and currently in its second edition, selling 6000 copies. My second book, Horse Photography: The Dynamic Guide for Horse Lovers is also an award winning book published in 2010, in its second edition, and selling well.
At the time I wrote Wild Hoofbeats, the main solutions for helping these heritage animals stay wild and free were to spread the word about the wild horse and to write Congressmen and Senators, urging them to support legislation to save America’s wild horses. Since then the situation has changed dramatically.
Now more than 45,000 of our wild horses are living in holding facilities, where they are at grave risk of being euthanized. Fewer than 30,000 remain free on public lands. Our President and Secretary of the Interior have both turned deaf ears to all pleas from the public for changing the destructive and expensive management strategies of the Bureau of Land Management. But there are ways to help.
This book will provide pro-active approaches that will change the way the public and land managers view the situation and its solutions: First, developing a cooperative relationship with the Bureau of Land management is vital whenever possible, and the book provides a terrific example of a partnership that is helping a wild herd in Wyoming. Next, failing cooperation, what is working today is litigation. There are 3 organizations right now fighting to keep our wild horses on public lands. Litigation requires strategies and funding, and the book discusses methods to support legal action.
Finally, we must plan for the future. Private sanctuaries for wild horses can preserve these horses for the future, independent of government policies.
Galloping to Freedom presents the serious arguments for proposed solutions, but it is also an elegant and evocative coffee table book, filled with my beautiful, award-winning images of horses in the wild and in sanctuaries, in vibrant color and in a large hardcover size that invites the reader first to browse, then to engage with the subject matter.
