About this project
Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (GAFFTA) is a nonprofit dedicated to building social consciousness through digital culture. Guided by the principles of openness, collaboration, and resource sharing, our programs promote creativity at the intersection of art, design, sound, and technology.
On October 1, Phase I of our facility will open to the public. Located at 55 Taylor Street in San Francisco, this space contains the main gallery, offices, and four resident artist studios. It will house ongoing exhibitions from local and international artists, lectures, workshops and classes, and various special events.
Our new home will provide a much-needed platform to incubate and celebrate work from the growing international digital art and electronic music communities, while offering technology literacy classes and creative workshops to the local youth of this underprivileged urban area.
Working closely with the city of San Francisco's Tenderloin Revitalization Project, GAFFTA will be a cornerstone in the development of a new Tenderloin Arts District and a major step towards the renewal of a vibrant, historic yet oft-overlooked neighborhood in the heart of the city.
We’re aiming to have at least $5,555 promised by our October 15th deadline. This initial kickstart will cover operational costs for our inaugural exhibition, OPEN. Any funds raised over that amount will be directly invested in the overhead of our subsequent exhibitions and Phase II of our facility: a neighboring store, café, and surround audio/visual performance theater set to open in Spring of 2010. Beyond Kickstarter, our annual funding goal is $1,000,000, and all of GAFFTA's staff donate their time as volunteers until a sustainable revenue flow is reached.
The support from our community is essential toward the success of GAFFTA and the renewal of the Tenderloin. Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (GAFFTA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building community through the collaborative exploration of art, design, technology, and digital culture.
