We've launched an exciting new project of our own! Introducing the Kickstarter app for iPhone!

Next Steps

Update #12 · Jun 7, 2012 · 58 comments

Hi Everyone.

After speaking with the good folks at Kickstarter, we can now confirm that they will not be able to switch our Amazon payments account - it is simply not possible to 'swap' when you are dealing with credit card processing and authorizations. While it is disappointing, we understand these protocols are there for good reason. To protect your financial information.

Unfortunately this means we will have to manually 'close' this project, and your pledged amounts will not be charged. We are very sorry for this inconvenience - believe me, this is not the kind of customer experience we wanted to deliver.

There is some good news however. Kickstarter have told us we are allowed to initiate a new project and can accept your pledges there!

The only catch is that once we have the new project live, you will have to go and re-pledge on the new project (we will give you the new project link when it becomes available). We understand the inconvenience this may cause, which is why, for your time and patience, we will be upgrading all of the rewards with an additional 5 Chameleon backgrounds. We are aiming to have the new Kickstarter project live by early next week.

I hope you understand, and bear with us as we get over this hurdle. If you are disappointed with us, I understand that too. As I stated before, we have every intention of delivering world class software to our customers. We love the passion that Chameleon has sparked and we intend to develop long lasting relationships with our customers.

Stay tuned for new instructions next week, and thanks for your patience.

Gabor

Yeah I too was surprised by the jump from $50 to $1000, and the fact that nobody pledged above $50 is quite revealing IMO.

Get the new project up and going asap. One thought: how about a pledge level between $50 and $1000? That's kind of a wide gulf. It might prompt people that can't part with a thousand to give more than fifty dollars. Just a thought.

Yup, just let me know when your ready again. Pledge a bit more this time, I fully support you guys Gabor. Glad to see that the project is still full steam ahead. Looking forward to the release, as for losing pledges, I doubt you'll lose too much support. We are all hanging out for the release ;-D

What does this mean we r not getting the chameleon app early, or at all I made my pledge a month ago. Do I have to pledge again to get the app early?

Creator Matt Oberlin on June 7, 2012

we should all pledge an extra 50 cents to a dollar (or more). It would make them reach their goal fast so that if we lose anybody in the transition everything can still continue as planned.

Jeffro, yes, I know charging only takes place once the time is over and I do expect all goes well. The point is, until this project does get stopped, it continues to pledge to an account that is no longer in control of Chameleon. And if if does not get stopped, transfers are made.
Note that if would have been possible to cancel the project already, as creators and backers can continue to post on the project even after that. Note also that it is the creator with the US requirements that runs the project in Kickstarter. Question is, is it only the ex-employee with the account that can cancel the project?

Glen, no money was taken by any employee. The backers don't get charged until the timer has expired, which still shows 7 days to go. There shouldn't be any money in the account yet, since nobody has been charged.

    17. Missing_small

Creator Glen Koskela on June 7, 2012

Don't get me wrong when it comes to the Chamaleon as a deliverable. I backed it.

Unfortunate if you have been screwed by your employee, bad things happen. You just need to manage this kind of events more professionally. First, in practice you hint that someone has taken the project money with him/her. You need to take actions and communicate that this does not hurt backers. Good move would have been to close the project already.

Do not ask copies of backing emails Kickstarter has sent. One should not ask for receipts of transactions to be forwarded. That is a simple rule in any business.

Chameleon is one thing and unfortunate that things got messed up. Yet this is a Kickstarter project. All above hurts Kickstarter's credibility, more than this one project. I did not expect to receive re-pledge mails. Or mails asking me to forward backer mails to someone. Or hear that projects get screwed. Or get such messages while money is still pledged on a project that seems to have simple management issues. It is weird that Kickstarter has not taken actions to confirm your messages about the account issues and plans to fix the situation. I will think twice before backing a project in future. Trust is so easy to lose.

Close the project now. Ensure that no charging (to your ex-employee) is ever made. Create the new project only after those steps. With that also I will re-pledge. But don't ask to re-pledge the new project if current project is kept open.

I think it will be interesting to see how many people re pledge.

I will as I think I would have purchased Chameleon from the PlayStore anyway.

As for the issue of having $50K of revenue riding on 1 staff member pulling through, while not wise is not that unusual.
      Good luck

Honestly, what I do not understand is: "How professional is it, to base such a project on a single empl. of a company (and its private credit card?)?"

Is a company that cannot handle something simple like that, able to deliver at the end? The financial risk of loosing ten bugs is quite low, but it feels strange.

With these "bumps" in the road, will we be able to meet the goal of $50,000 again? Perhaps set a lower goal of $25,000 or $30,000 to ensure the project is funded?

From a general perceptive not really cool. But it is understandable. as stuff happens.
In the end, we (or at least I) backed the project because of the product, and I think that all should focus on that.
I am very interested in your product, so of cause I will be moving over. Sad though, that you have reached your goal, but now it has to start all over again :)

I will definitely re-pledge, I am extremely excited for this product to come out and I will stand behind as long as it takes, and as stated above, I would be more than happy to beta test on an asus transformer prime to make sure that this app will work flawlessly. I have been disciplined many times by apps that dont use the Prime to its full potential so I want to make sure that this app is as good as i can be when it is officially released. :P
