About this project

Life is no time to be practical. And with that in mind, in honor of my mother, Florence-Lily, I want to build the World's Largest Collection of Giant Cuckoo-Clocks. Lily collected cuckoo-clocks. Her clocks may have been numerous, but they were of course, actually quite small in real life. That's not how I remember them. As a small child they always seemed so much larger than life. And why just build one giant cuckoo (which actually aren't all that uncommon) when I can build a whole collection of giant cuckoos?

Lily passed away years ago, but I've remained on the artistic direction she always encouraged me to take. It's time! I want the collection both grand and silly - an interactive installation that combines our love for kitsch with our anxiety over entropy.

I would like the collection easily transportable so it can be installed at different locations. The actual cuckoos, will vary in size but all will be taller than the average person. All of them will function as working clocks. I hope to make my giant cuckoo-clocks available for weddings. I mean, who wouldn't want a birthday party with giant noisy cuckoo-clocks...???

They wouldn’t be as flat as they’re seen here. They will have more of a traditional clock form and be less like a box.

While I plan on building some clocks as assemblages using found materials, others will be more traditional in appearance. I've been asked a lot about the sounds these clocks will perform.

I've already started work on a few of the sound-generators using an old player organ. Here's a [mp3] link to one of them: http://tiny.cc/x823r

Here's another [mp3] sample of one I made from a modified music box: http://tiny.cc/4mqp7

The funds will cover the costs of building materials, supplies, and the rental of a temporary space for the construction. If funds allow, I would also want to commission other artists to construct their own versions of a giant cuckoo-clock for the collection.

PLEASE NOTE -

I've decided, even if I don't get the funding, I'm still going to be sending everyone a special thank-you gift in the mail. If I do get the funding, you get your pledge reward. If I don't get the funding, you'll still get a little something from me of my choosing. Just my way of saying thanks for believing in me, that the feeling is very much mutual.
