Well, this wasn't the update I wanted to be writing.
First, I want to thank everyone who has supported the project and talked it up within their own communities. Most everyone has backed the project at higher than the $1 level and that means a lot in terms of your commitment D&D community and having free tools to use in your games.
Unfortunately the project was unsuccessful and I'd like to take a few moments to discuss why I think it didn't work out for three big reasons:
I thought that following the success of several large 'nerdy' projects like OOTS, Schlock, Double-Fine, etc. would have been a benefit as the concept of Kickstarting a project was more well known within the community.
Unfortunately what ended up happening was that the project was timed poorly with conventions and with D&D Next.
I'm a nobody within the D&D Community. I thought that I could overcome this limitation by being able to post at many D&D community websites and forums (since the project isn't commercial in nature), but pretty much in all cases I was denied permission to post.
So it became an uphill battle for me to get the word out about the project.
The goal of creating a free Character Sheet app for D&D 4e was very important to me (and all of you wonderful backers). I wanted to carry support for 4e into the future for those who wished to still play it and keep up with the times in terms of technology. It seems, however, that most players are now concerned with D&D Next, and are happy to leave 4e behind. If I had started this last year I think there would be a different tale to tell here at the end.
In addition, because I don't have any control over the D&D IP there were very limited items I could offer in terms of rewards for backing the project. Most projects here on Kickstarter offer physical rewards and even copies of the end product. Because I wanted to create a free product for everyone, there wasn't anything special or unique I could offer backers.
Finally, I couldn't offer Android support. I couldn't promise Android support, because I don't know the platform, but this seemed to be the largest & most numerous criticism of the project I've received everywhere I've been able to post.
A big Thank-You
So a big thanks to everyone who backed this project and/or shared the project within their community. It doesn't mean that this is the end of an interactive version of a 4e character sheet app, but it is going on the back burner for a while.
Signing off for now,
