Start Playing Now details, more Ragnarök previews
Hi everyone. What a long month, right? We're hard at work on getting production ready to go, but we don't want to keep you waiting for a chance to play Last Stand either.
In the next week all players will receive the Start Playing Now document. It includes:
- Around 50 cards - at least eight suits of armor and 40 powers.
- 20 different monsters - each with powers for players to steal
- Sample field effects, including things like burning buildings and panicked citizens
- The actual rules, everything from ripping powers to combat to wagers to bribes
- Basic game advice
We need to save a few things for the full release of Last Stand, but the Start Playing Now pdf should get you up and running with enough content to last for months of play.

RAGNARÖK IS COMING
In short, Ragnarök is about beating the various creatures and characters of Norse mythology and then crafting things from their corpses. It's very grisly even compared to Last Stand that way, but it's not without precedent in the mythology! The world was crafted from the great giant Ýmir, with his brow forming the world we know (and the reason you see shapes in the clouds is because they're made from his brain, i.e. his thoughts). Similarly, when the wolf Fenrir was bound, the same material plus others (such as the footfall of the cat and the beard of the woman) were called on to craft a chain which would hold the wolf. Loki himself was bound in the guts of his own son when he was imprisoned.
The main difference in Ragnarök is that this ability has now been granted to mortals, and has thus been weaponized. The mortals are first inducted into the family through a blood rite performed with Odin, then tattooed in the blood of his closest family during their initial training. The mortals will learn at the feet of the gods, wrestle with Þór, debate strategy with Týr, learn shapeshifting from Freyja and even hear poetry from blind Höður to help prepare them. Once all that is done, they will create their first weapons - preferably from a giant they personally killed at the besieged walls of Ásgard - and then be set loose to defeat Fate itself and avert the world's end. That is, if you feel Odin and the Gods deserve escaping the Fate they crafted for themselves...
Mechanics wise, the game depends on a static resource called Fury. Fury grants different bonuses based on your training, but it can also act as an effective cap on how much you can spend on abilities or wagers and can significantly change how your character fights. A Berserker is highly resilient and unpredictable, but an Úlfhéðinn (Wolf-Skinner) will actually turn into a werewolf as their Fury grows!
Fury is gained through Sacrifice. Sacrifice means accepting a penalty or losing access to a weapon or ability in exchange for Fury. You also gain Fury for dancing on the edge of death (while at 0 in any stat). The essential balance of the game is therefore to gain power at the risk of exposing yourself to more danger than you can easily handle.
There are other features, such as Naming your weapons to gain interesting narrative benefits, but those are the concepts I am working with and bringing to fruition for all the great backers. You'll know more soon enough!
