INTRODUCTION

We are planning to make a short 15 minute fiction film called 'We Come From The Sea'. The story is mostly set in California, on the coastline and in the desert, but since we're based in London, we'll shoot the film in a studio in London and on location in Spain. We initially raised funding privately and came close to shooting this film in October, but unfortunately, one of our key investors had to pull out at the last minute. We were devastated, but we could not imagine letting this project go. It's a truly incredible story and we're determined to make this film happen. So we’ve put our heads together to figure out another way of funding it, and here we are!

THE STORY

The film opens with a young woman standing on a pier, waiting for news of her brother, a sailor lost on a sunken navy ship at sea. Faced with this loss, she decides to leave the coast and drives to the desert, where she settles in a small town. But despite the passing of time and her new surroundings, she cannot escape the sea.

The story unfolds like a maritime legend told so many times the facts have become murky. Everything begins with completely normal circumstances, but as the film progresses, the plot slowly departs reality, and things become somewhat unusual. Details are exaggerated. Surroundings change, rooms grow larger. Scientists and deep sea divers put in an appearance. Live action briefly gives way to stop-motion animation. And finally the plot reaches its peak, where everything the character has tried to leave behind resurfaces, both visually and figuratively.

WHY WE NEED FUNDING

‘We Come From The Sea’ is certainly an ambitious short film, but we’re aiming high. We want this film to be fantastic. We have nearly completed pre-production and are planning to shoot the film in March. And here is why we need your help:

The main thing we need funding for is equipment hire, both in London and Spain. The film will be shot on the new Arri Alexa HD camera by our incredibly talented cinematographer, Luis Posada. This camera does not come cheap, but we think the visual quality it will give our film justifies the cost. The exterior locations will all be shot in Spain, in the Tabernas desert in Andalucia (where parts of Lawrence of Arabia and Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns were shot), as well as on the Almeria coast. This landscape is central to the story: it visually represents the physical and symbolic distance the character travels in order to escape the sea and her memories. Although the crew we’ll take to Spain will be really small, we still need to pay for travel and accommodation costs, as well as filming permits and insurance.

The other big cost we need to cover is production design, set building materials and studio hire. The most important interior location is a small room in the character's apartment that will expand as the story progresses, which is why we need to build the set in a small London studio.

WHY YOU SHOULD BACK OUR PROJECT

In a way, although we had a major setback with our funding before, we like to think we had the benefit of a trial run; we’ve already overcome a lot of hurdles, and we’re more determined than ever. With our experience so far, we are ready to tackle this ambitious story and confident that we can turn it into a great film!

We have an extremely talented and passionate group working together. Everyone that’s putting their time and energy into this film is doing it only because they really believe in the story -- none of us are getting paid. We came so close to making this film, so we really need your help to make it happen. We hope you will help us create something amazing.
