Hi, thank you for visiting my Kickstarter page. My name is Jonathon McNair, and I am trying to self-publish my first photography book, The Freeman Files. I am a native of San Francisco, and besides for photography, I enjoy road trips and meeting new people.
I've owned my Minolta camera for about 3 years to date, finally utilizing it over the last 11 months where I've continued to photograph whats inspired me. Ninety percent of the time I leave my home, my camera's on standby waiting to capture what I come across wherever I end up and/or the journey along the way.
Very pleased at what I've developed and with art show invitations and shows, I felt a push of inspiration! What started as a trial & error project from dealing with an unfamiliar camera had suddenly evolved into a conceptual personal photography project book nine months later by my thirtieth roll of film.
Entitled The Freeman Files, the name could not have come any more natural than my first camera in '96. Freeman is my middle name, and files, because the whole book is dedicated to traditional 35mm photography that feels like an old detectives files.
I began designing my book early July, from scratch using Blurbs BookSmart® software for Adobe InDesign, providing one-hundred percent full creative control over the layout & text. A jolt of energy hit me, I had all these great photos; I started with three pages and couldn't stop designing. Countless hours, days & weeks I'd focused mainly on the perfect placement for photos, accounting for white space, some captions, the books spine and footer.
Mentioned above, this project started as a personal photography book. I took high pride in my film photography and wanted something physically tangible, something to show friends, or to have in addition to my portfolio. I worked on my book constantly. With my friends who are already heavily in the world of art, I would share my computer screen and they'd share their opinions and/or suggestions. Bombarded with inquisitive questions such as; "When was this!?", "Whats the story behind this one?", "Where were you!?" or "Who's she!?".
This is just the feeling I wanted my photography to give. Perspective, truth, insight, lifestyle. I decided to expand my project. I chatted with publishers, they loved it, but said its not very typical, "its got a lot of naked people!". That's when I decided we'd stay independent gathering support and maintain notoriety from our community!
The Freeman Files is currently at 190 pages and includes over 200 images! We will be doing an offset print run of hundreds of the book. By funding this project, you are helping us to create the world where a book like this can exist.
