Update #10: Portrait of an Artista/Barista #4: Cara Francis

Posted on January 18, 2011

CARA JANE FRANCIS

When I'm grown up I wanna be like my crazy Southern grandma!

My favorite piece of FAB Cafe is firstly me. Whenever I am there, I am my favorite piece. Because I allow myself to be alive. After that, I like the grinder. Because it's loud and it shows those shiny, sumptuous espresso beans who is boss!

The reason why I can't live without coffee: Okay, this may sound strange, but for some reason whenever I drink it I feel a little bit more...alert. Is that weird? It really does make me feel kind of woken up... is that crazy?

What I will never forget while working as a barista: I fell in love with a customer. Then, a few years later, I was a customer and a barista fell in love with me.

The reason why you absolutely have to visit FAB Cafe: Someone will probably fall in love with you...

My favorite piece of art that I've created is my next one!

Tell us a project you were working on recently: I am a Neo-Futurist! We do Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind every single weekend right down the street at the Kraine Theater. Been running for almost seven years now. Ask me when I'm in it and get a ticket!

Update #9: Grand Opening TODAY!

Posted on January 12, 2011

First, thank you to all the backers, helpers, friends, family, and new customers who helped us get to our Grand Opening. Without the support, financial, moral, and hands-on that you provided, we never would have gotten this far.

Tonight we hope to see you at what is not only our Grand Opening, from 6pm-8pm, but it is our inaugural art exhibit on our East wall by Harumi Ori, our current ArtUp artist. Last night we stayed late and got very snowed on to get our first exhibit up on time. Harumi brought friends and her husband to help out with the hanging of her signature orange mesh pieces. Check out the pictures of the installation in progress below.

We hope to see you today at the Grand Opening where there will be grilled cheese and free MUD Coffee for everyone.

Update #7: Portrait of an Artista/Barista #3: Matt Poole

Posted on January 7, 2011

MATT POOLE
Age: 25

I'm a: Classy Lady

My favorite part of FAB Cafe is the bright colors.

I love coffee because it's a wonderful excuse to be social. That, and addiction.

What was your funniest barista experience:
I once had a customer describe my previous lives to me while I made her a mocha.

What you will find on my playlist: The Black Keys, Of Montreal, The Weepies, Belle & Sebastian, Sleigh Bells, and other random stuff.

The reason you absolutely have to visit FAB Cafe: The adorable baristas, duh.

Tell us about a project you were working on recently:
After three years of working in coffee shops, I worked as Stage Manager for a play about working in a coffee shop. It was surreal.

Favorite piece of art I've created:
I collected discarded Starbucks cards, cut them up, and made a pretty fantastic mosaic.

Tell us why you think the cafe is important:
I think deep down, we all want a place like Cheers: comfortable, friendly, welcoming, and where everyone knows your name. I think this could become that place for this community.
