In this, the final 12 for '12 trilogy, young fantasy monsters must learn to be good — or die.
We met our initial funding goal last weekend. Thanks, Backers! Woot!
We also cracked our first two stretch goals, which gives free Brave New World trilogy ebooks to all $50+ backers, and all that plus free Shotguns & Sorcery ebooks to all $75+ backers. We're reaching for more beyond that, including a free ebook copy of my upcoming book about my 12 for '12 year. You can also now add-on printed books from the previous trilogy, and you can even order a handmade slipcase for your complete set of omnibuses!

You can add on and mix and match as many books from any trilogy that you like. You can even order multiple copies from any trilogy if too. Please add $10 per book for international postage, or $5 for Canada or Mexico.
- $75: A handmade slipcase to fit a full set of either the hardcover or softcover omnibuses.
Please add $15 per slipcase for international postage, or $10 for Canada or Mexico.
All stretch goal and add-on copies are similar to the editions that backers of the earlier Kickstarters receive, although they won't be personalized or autographed. That's reserved for those early backers. If you backed the earlier drives and already have autographed ebooks coming your way, don't fret. This means you can have an extra set of the ebooks to give to whoever you like. Plus you still get all the regular benefits for your backing level.
All add-ons count toward our stretch goals.
Once the drive is over, I'll send out a survey asking exactly what you want for your pledge. Thanks to you all for your fantastic support!
Good triumphs over evil, scouring darkness from the land, but while the Great Evil has been banished, little ones still lurk in the corners. The new king orders all monsters put to death, but when a vampire lord turns his granddaughter — Princess Adamant — into a young bloodsucker, the king repents and founds the Royal Academy for Creature Habilitation, a boarding school for monsters who have yet to harm anyone.
The Monster Academy trilogy follows the adventures of Ruddy, an orphaned young dragon who often takes the form of a skinny teen with blazing red hair. Rescued from the keep of adventurers illegally raising him as their flying mount, Ruddy winds up remanded to the Monster Academy, where he is told that he has one last chance to become a valuable citizen of the kingdom — or face death.
Under the watchful eye of Mr. Mortis, the undead wizard who serves as the academy's reluctant headmaster, Ruddy must deal with a demonic girl (Lucy), goblin quadruplets (Ay, Bee, Cee, and Dee), and an ogre bully (Krusha), as well as teachers who threaten him with punishments ranging from writing lines on a tablet all the way up to summary execution. Along the way, he makes friends with the rebellious Princess Adamant and becomes best pals with a werewolf boy (Growf), who only gets into trouble during full moons.
During his time at Monster Academy, Ruddy learns the secret of what really happened to his parents and how the Great Evil was defeated. Armed with that knowledge, he and his friends must choose sides and grow up fast, knowing that if they fail these final exams, the entire kingdom falls with them.
Monster Academy is a trilogy of novels set in what amounts to a juvenile detention center for monsters. If you have to mix and match similar things in Hollywood style, you might call it "Harry Potter meets The Shawshank Redemption"or "Dungeons & Dragons meets The Green Mile" or "The Lord of the Rings meets Cool Hand Luke."
But, you know, for kids. And it's like none of those things exactly, of course.
It has its dark moments and its scary moments — and even it's laugh-out-loud moments — but at its heart it's a story about figuring out who you are and who your friends are and realizing your place in the world. It's also a great adventure tale about how even young people can shake a nation if they're willing to challenge established ideas and be true to themselves.
While most of my novels have been aimed at adults, I started out my career as a novelist by creating The Knights of the Silver Dragon, the first series published under Wizards of the Coast's Mirrorstone imprint for young readers. I wrote the first book in the series — Secret of the Spiritkeeper — and the last two as well.
I had a wonderful time working on those books, and I want to get back to doing stories like them again, things that everyone from my 10-year-old quadruplets to my 90-year-old grandmother can read and enjoy. Here's where it happens.
This is the final part of my 12 for '12 project, a year-long challenge in which I plan to write a novel* every month in 2012. I've broken 12 for '12 up into four trilogies, and this Kickstarter project represents the fourth of them. I've already used Kickstarter to fund the first three trilogies: the Matt Forbeck's Brave New World trilogy, the Shotguns & Sorcery trilogy, and the Dangerous Games trilogy.
The drives for the first two trilogies raised over $12,000 each, and the last one brought in over $18,000. Here's hoping the Monster Academy trilogy is the best one yet.
[*By novel, I mean a work of fiction that’s at least 50,000 words, a bit shorter than most of my novels, which tend toward 80,000 words, but spot on for younger readers. The Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards each define a novel as anything over 40,000 words, but I want to be a bit more ambitious. And 50,000 words is, not coincidentally, the number of words writers shoot for during National Novel Writing Month.]
Honestly, I'm a little behind at the moment. My whole family came down with a horrible cold in the spring that knocked me out for a month, and then I took another month to write the first novel for the Leverage TV show. (Yeah, I probably shouldn't have, but it's such a great show!) In addition to the 12 for '12 books, I also write the Magic: The Gathering comic for IDW, kick out a few smaller projects here and there, and help raise my five school-age kids.
Anyhow, I'm catching up fast. There's no guarantee this won't still blow up in my face, of course, but I'm going to bust my hump to make it work. No matter what happens, though, I promise you'll get your books.
With the first two trilogies, I set a low goal for the first book in the trilogy and then set the second and third books as rewards for hitting stretch goals. I think this caused a number of backers to balk at the idea of maybe backing a series that wouldn't get finished.
With the third, I set the goal for all three books at once, as an all-or-nothing drive, and it worked much better. Feel free to back the project as much as you like without having to worry about your money. If the drive gets funded, I'll write all three books, and if it (let's hope not) falls short, you're not out a dime.
If we crack $12k in funding, the Respect the Streak benefit kicks in. I'll give free ebook editions of the Brave New World trilogy from the first Kickstarter to everyone who pledges $50 or more. These are similar to the editions that backers of the first Kickstarter receive, although they won't be personalized or autographed. That's reserved for those early backers.
If we reach $14k, I'll toss in free ebook editions of the Shotguns & Sorcery trilogy from the second Kickstarter to everyone who pledges $75 or more. And if we break $16k, I'll throw in free ebook editions of the Dangerous Games trilogy from the third Kickstarter to everyone who pledges $100 or more.
If you backed the earlier drives and already have autographed copies coming your way, don't fret. This means you can have an extra set of the books to give to whoever you like. Plus you still get all the regular benefits for your backing level.
I want to express my gratitude to everyone who's supported this crazy plan so far, and thank in advance everyone who steps up this time too. Please pledge whatever you like or can, but also don't forget to spread the word far and wide about this project. Tell your friends, family, and neighbors and even strangers if they'll listen. It's been an amazing year so far, and I'd love to have as many people as possible along for the ride!
You only get charged if we reach the listed goal of $10k. Even then your card will only be charged after the project comes to an end on September 16.
Spread the word far and wide. Tweet about it. Share it on Facebook. Plug it on Google+. Tell your friends and neighbors. To make sure we hit our goal, we'll need lots of others to sign on, and I truly appreciate any and everything you can do to help. Thanks!
True! However, you can pledge whatever you like — and you can change your pledge at any time until the drive is over on June 17. To keep things simple and help remind people about it, if/when we get close to that stretch goal, I'll add another reward level at the $75 level to make it clearer. I don't want to confuse anyone before then. (But maybe I did anyhow. It's a hard call.)
