I've been a full-time writer and game designer since 1989. Game projects I've worked on have won 5 ENnies and been nominated for 28 Origins Awards and won 14. I've had 16 novels and countless stories published by traditional publishers, from Penguin and Del Rey to Games Workshop and Wizards of the Coast. My latest is CARPATHIA, from Angry Robot. I also write the Magic: The Gathering comic for IDW.
I live in Wisconsin with my wife and five kids, including a set of quadruplets. Visit Forbeck.com for all the details!
I'm still working on the revisions for BNW Revelations. I hope to have them done soon, but I'm still scrambling to catch up with this month after falling ill at the start of the month. As soon as I finish my current book, though, that's top of the list.
Hey Matt, any news on when ebook 2 is due out? Just finished Carpathia and need something new to dig into :) btw - a Carpathia short story on what happened later would be awesome... left me thinking that ;)
Thanks, Julio!
Congratulations, man! I can't wait to see this awesome roject done!
Well done, Matt.
Also, thanks to all the other backers of this project for pushing it past the trilogy post. 2012 is setting up to be an amazing year!
Thanks, Angela! My head's still spinning, I think.
Congrats, Matt - a fantastic achievement indeed! :)
And that's it! Thanks so much to everyone for all your support, both in terms of pledges and in spreading the word. I cannot wait to start writing these books!
But I will — until January 1. :)
Very cool. Those Bargainers are tricky. ;)
My brother has my copy of Ravaged Planet, but here are the rest:

We, uh, kept coming across extra copies of Bargainers. I have no explanation.
Thanks, Timothy! Woot!
Thanks, Jonathan! I'd love to see that. :)
Congrats Matt!
Congratulations, Matt! I'm getting that old gaming itch again. I think I might be able to rekindle some BNW under the Hero system. We have all of the old books!
Thanks, David! Truly appreciated.
Heard about this through Glenn's post; hope you hit 12k!
Thanks so much, Aaron! Jeff Babb just did the same. It's contagious! :)
15 hours to go, I upped my pledge - let's get that third book! :)
Thanks to all the backers, I'm going to be spending a LOT of time with those books over the next few months. :)
Totally makes me want to break out the BNW books!
Well, Matt...you da man! :)
Aw, thanks, Patrick! I'm looking forward to coming up with a Delta with you for the books! That's actually 3 of the 10 gone. :)
well Matt, since the 2nd book was unlocked...i upped my pledge to 500 like i said i would. Of course, Cindy is under the assumption that we would do that if all 3 books were unlocked. oops...well, she can only make me sleep in the garage for so long ;) cant wait to read these!
O.K.
I just brainstormed the ideas and lost track of your reward structure (about the character names). Hope more backers like my ideas. I specially love the ones about internal art and extra words.
Hm. That's an interesting idea, but again my agreement with AEG wouldn't cover that. I might be able to toss in stats of various characters in the book. I'm a bit leery of the extra time that would take, though, as the 12 for '12 project's bound to take up a ton of that. Of course, BNW stats are pretty fast to work with.
Hmmm. Might be good for later projects though. Pathfinder stats for fantasy characters, Savage Worlds stats for others. Thanks for the thoughts!
You could also offer a version of the rules and setting on the back of the book (after the novels, even intended to adapt the novels [or better yet further developments based on them]) as many French RPGs used to do.
Those are great ideas, Kairam. I already have the options for people to get characters named after themselves, although they don't start until the $250 mark.
I'd love to toss in other merchandise but for the fact that my agreement with AEG is for the book and things that go in it, like illustrations or the map. T-shirts, for instance, fall way outside of that, as do copies of the game. DriveThruRPG gave me a deal for my backers by allowing me to offer PDFs of the core rulebook for only $5 ($13 off!), but they can't do the same for printed copies because their costs on those are much higher and fixed.
Small printed bits like postcards or bookmarks might be doable, as they're relatively cheap in short runs. Would anyone else out there want such things?
However, those are great things to keep in mind for the future Kickstarters, over which I'll have 100% control.
More funding options:
You could offer a few extra and exclusive pages (like an afterword or preface) for a few extra dollars.
There is also the popular kickstarter option of giving the name of the backer to a minor or even major character (or place) of the book. An alternative to this that is also popular is working with the backer to determine the name of a character (or even place) in the work.
T-shirts
Postcards
Promotional art (maybe a sketch inside the book, illustrations or even extra pages with art as if the book was adapted to the big screen [like a storyboard]), posters.
Stationary items like notepads themed after BNW or the novels (places, characters, etc.)
Printed copies of the BNW RPG!
Bookmarks (with text or images from the novels or the wide world of BNW)
Printed cards with the backer level (hero, alpha, player,, sidekick, etc.) like a business card with text to be figured out with the backer's input)
All and any of these could also be added to existing levels ;)
Best!
Thanks very much for the backing, Dave! I hadn't thought of extending the pledge date, to be honest.
Aaaaand I just checked, and it can't be done. Once you launch a Kickstarter project, the end date is fixed. Note that no one gets charged until December 4 though.
Good luck Matt, hope to add more later as the season winds down. You going to extend the pledge date any?
Thanks for the huge backing, Matt! You truly rock!
Thank you too, Troy! That kind of growing support makes me grin. :)
I added another $20 to my pledge hoping to get three books out of this!
Go get 'em, tiger.
Thanks so much, Guy! I appreciate any support. Here's hoping for better times for us all.
I don't have much at the moment in the way of spare cash but here you go, Matt.
I of course will buy the book itself when it is in print & try and somehow to get it signed here in the UK. ~ Guy
Patrick, Cindy is now my new favorite wife of a cousin. Unless Sophia Kuhn is reading this. Then it's a tie. (Must be something about Colorado.) Um, with Sara Kuhn too. ;)
Thanks, David! I'll have to thank Toby too. :)
My wife said that I can up my pledge to 500 if the other books unlock...:)
Tobias Buckell recommended this: I wish you luck, Matt!
Thanks, Tony! I'm pretty confident we'll hit the first goal. Then we'll have to stretch hard for the rest! :)
Good luck Matt. Although I have a feeling you will not need it.
Did I say "fewer"? I think I meant "more."
But a plethora of bullets is the whole reason to watch the A-Team...
That's the plan! Here's hoping it comes together like it would for the A-Team — maybe with fewer bullets.
Fingers crossed that this kickstarter does well enough to fund more than just this novel. ;)
