How is Forage Kitchen Different?
What is unique about Forage Kitchen?
I've been asked this question a bunch in the last several weeks, and thought it would be good to send out for everyone.Forage Kitchen will be much
more than just a shared use kitchen. It will be a home base for people
starting food businesses, but also an intentional community where anyone
who is interested in food can come to work and create.
If you’re someone who just really loves to cook, and either doesn’t have
the equipment or the time to do it at home, there is space for you at
Forage Kitchen. For $100/month with our “Maker” memberships (the $99
pledge on kickstarter),
you’ll be able to use our kitchen. That’s being able to use all of our
professional equipment, along with having all your dishes washed for
you.
With the group buying program we’re setting up, you just need to tell us
what you're cooking, and we’ll have the ingredients waiting for you
when you arrive. We’ll be sourcing quality local produce and meat, and
through group purchasing we’ll be able to get great prices, while at the
same time supporting all the great local farms and ranches in our area.
If you need a hand making a dish, we’ll have professional folks there to
help you along with your creations. Or you can take a class in our
workshop. We’ll train you on the equipment, and create a welcoming
atmosphere where you can learn and create alongside other folks who love
food. You’ll be able to move out of your cramped home kitchen and into
the light of our 4,000 sq ft space. Like a Techshop
for food, Forage Kitchen will allow easy access to equipment and
supplies usually reserved for professionals. We want to make our kitchen
as accessible as possible, and make it easy for people who love to cook
to have develop their skills and pursue their passion for food.
If you’re a brewer, we’ll have something for you too. A 10 and 20 gallon
nano brewery will give you a chance to get out of your garage and brew
on professional equipment. We’ll offer classes, as well as a rotating
“brewer in residence” position for those that prove they can make some
great beer. This beer will be sold in the café (a space that will also
highlight the food being made inside) in the front, so even people who
don’t want to use the kitchen will be able to taste what’s being created
inside.
If you’re trying to start a business, this space is designed for you.
The artisan producers will really be the heart of the space - the group
that supports and is supported by, the rest of the Forage Kitchen
community. We’ll not only have kitchen rental at low rates, but a
shared-use office (possibly with a view of the Bay if everything goes to
plan!), business support when you need it, cold and dry storage, and
most importantly, an intentional community of people who can help and
support you along the way. This will be a home base where you can grow
and expand until you’re ready to break off on your own.
I toured our potential kitchen space a few days ago, and I am so
incredibly excited about the grand possibilities of this project and
what it will mean to the Bay Area food community. This building is
amazing, and will be an epic addition to the San Francisco food scene. I
can’t wait to show you, but I need your help to make this vision a
reality. There are only 2 weeks left on our kickstarter, so if you think
this is a space that should exist, show the world by pledging today.
Thank you
